I am a senior starting to have short term memory loss. What can I do to stop it before it gets worse without seeking professional treatment. Has anybody done so and does it work?

    Hi,

I am 67 male with simular problem.

My GP sent me to see a phsychiatrist at the local hospital for the memory clinic tests.

After a couple of hours of questions tests and conversation it was decided I should have an mri of my brain as he suspected "early onset of Vascular dementia".

Went back two weeks later only to be told the mri was okay, nothing wrong with my brain.

He reckoned my medication was too blame, especially my dosage of Amatryptaline. I saw my GP and dropped my dosage from 40mg to 10 mg. Within a few days I had crippling sciatica and couldn't walk more than 3-4 steps.

I am now back on the 40 mg Amatryptaline if my memory wasn't so bad I would have remembered why I took 40 mg in the first place, ah pain free again.

    Mike.

This is the reason why I hesitate to seek professional help. I have had other medical problems with medical professionals.

Lester, try to have a daily exercise regime where you take in lots of oxygen by deep breathing. Power walking is good..thats very brisk walking, not just a stroll.    Or join a local gym and use a treadmill.   Seniors often slow down without realising it and take shallower breaths,so you have to be pro-active about it.

At least once per day try to breathe out so that you expel as much air from your lungs as possible and then breathe in very deeply. Do this 3 times and hold the last breath in.      Be careful...this may make you dizzy at first but it certainly seems to work.

Do crosswords and Mensa puzzles as well

Lester,I wonder which of my suggestions you would find hard to do. I'm guessing the gym and power walking.  I understand your hesitation about the gym but gyms are not only for the young and super fit. There are lots of over 80s who go to the gym to swim and just do a walk on the treadmill. It doesnt have to be strenuous.

However,I understand your hesitancy if you have never been.   Do at least try the deep exhaling and inhaling every morning. You could do that sitting down.  A few light exercises every day can help enormously. Also joining a club is a good idea.
