Shortness of breath and pounding heart?

Posted , 3 users are following.

Hi, for the last week or so I have been feeling extremely short of breath both at rest, but is exacerbated by exercise. My heart is also constantly pounding, its not beating any faster than usual but it just feels like its working a lot harder and I can hear it at all times of the day, and also feel it throughout my body as well as see it in my neck. I also sometimes get chest pains.

I am 21 and lead a relatively health lifestyle, but I am also in recovery of anorexia nervosa. I am really really concerned there is something wrong with my heart, like heart failure or mitral valve prolapse or something like that.

The problem is I can't currently go to the doctors because our country is in lockdown due to corona virus. I did go to the doctors about 2 weeks ago and my blood pressure is normal and he listened to my heart but at that time I didn't mention all the symptoms I had been having.

I am really concerned and any advice or help would be appreciated.

Thanks!

sorry you are going through this. If the doctor listened to your heart he or she would have noticed if something was wrong. It doesn’t matter if your heart was beating harder as long as it was regular your doctor wasn’t concerned. You are recovering from anorexia, So it’s natural that you might feel it beating stronger. even with people who have anxiety, the heart may beat harder because things like anxiety or anorexia tire out the entire body. With my anxiety my heart beats much stronger, And I can often hear it and feel it beating especially when I’m exercising. But my heart is in good condition.

make sure that you are staying hydrated! Drink plenty of water throughout the day. That’s very important.

remember that anxiety and stress can also cause all kinds of symptoms that are not harmful.

maybe you can do a virtual online appointment with your doctor just for your peace of mind. Tell your doctor about the chest pain and anything else you are concerned about. Even though the doctor cannot examine you at least you can talk about it and get his or her opinion or suggestions. Hope you feel better

    Hi Millie,

Sorry you are having a bad time. Don't jump to worse case scenario, it will most likely be anxiety, if you are in recovery for anorexia I'm sure you must be going through a tough time. Another simple reason but than can also cause shortness of breath and thumping heart is iron deficiency. Have you had your iron and vitamin levels checked recently?

Congratulations and I hope you continue with your recovery, you are a champ!!
