hi

I'm 6wks post op tomorrow.

my question is should I be able to:-

lift the operated leg high in bed? I just dont seem to.

(sorry for the wording here) but open my legs or open this leg out to the side? again I've tried and its slowly increasing every day, but is this something I will or should be able to do?

I hear alot of people talk about PT but I've never had any or been referred. I just had 2 sessions 15mins each after my op in hospital.

As i had to re arrange my appointment for my 6wk follow up, i dont see my consultant till I'm 9wks post op. so got a book and writing questions down to ask.

I stopped using crutches inside from 3wks and outside since 4wks post op and taking good strides but tire easily in afternoons but no pain or discomfort and ive been back at work since 2wks 3days post op.

we talk about precautions, but no one says really what you should be able to do (I appreciate everyone is different and time isn't an issue) but would be nice to know questions...

I.e

will I ever be able to fasten my shoes again

will I be able to have normal intimacy without thinking about precautions.

will I be able to kneel to garden or get down on floor to sort out boxes.

will I be able to bend down to pick up my small dog??

also when can I start bending passed 90 degrees and how will I know?

I cannot find answers... and thought best to ask people who've been through this and have experiences....

    I have had both hips replaced. With the first one, the PT wanted me to lift my leg straight up and I simply could not do it. It was as if my brain was not communicating with that leg. I don't remember how long it took, but one day I was finally able to lift it! With the second hip replacement I was able to do leg lifts almost immediately. Don't worry about it. Just keep trying.

    first remember everyone is different and Dr orders are different too

    i had my left hip done 3 years ago

    my right hip 7 weeks ago

    it takes time and patience you will be able to put your socks and shoes on but for now be careful.I have a tool that helps me put my socks on. i still have restrictions on bending more than 90 degrees. and even after restrictions are lifted I am careful what I do.

    i have exercises that i do and go to PT twice a week.

    i am walking without cane but do use it when I go out with rain and snow and helps prevent people running in to you in the stores.

    i still don't have the strength but getting better everyday.

    don't leave others try to tell you you should be doing this and that everyone is different .

    first time being intimate is scary but it will be fine

    even there was a difference in first surgery to this one when they told me they were going to get me up in the recovery room and walk I looked at them like they were nuts but I did get up twice in the recovery room and walk . I was in so much pain before surgery it was a relief, I could hardly walk before surgery. it will get better just takes time my Dr told me a whole year till healed completely. i am 65 have 2 hips 1 knee hang in there

    YIKES! They started me on PT the next day after my surgeries.

    I haven't been on the floor for over a year. I bent down the other day to pick up my niece who is 10 mos old and did something to my hip, my thigh hurts now. Won't be doing that again ever.

    When you came out of hispital they should have given you a list of exercises to do immediately

    (1) slide leg to the side on the bed

    (2) slide your heel towards your bum

    (3) ankle pumps

    when you came home

    holding a chair or kitchen unit

    (1) marching knee lifts

    (2) side leg raises

    (3) raising onto tippytoes

    (4) backward step then lean back ( small lunge to stretch your hip flexor)

    The problem is that if you havent done the exercises some of your muscles will have tightened up as they heal.

    Everyone is different as you say so the problem is we cant say what you should be able to do only speak for ourselves

    If it is improving a little everyday then its fine.

    At 6 weeks for each hip i was told i had no restrictions but my bottom ( glutes) felt very tight. At 10 weeks i can easily bend more than 90 degrees but it is essential that all movements are done slowly. i can tie my shoes, pick up the dog do all the things you ask about - i expect you can too soon but please do be careful and take it slowly and do it in stages ( see all the people who have had a terrible time)

    i found an article that i posted here that basically said that the precautions are not actually necessary!

      it really annoy me, that I was told by pt in hospital only to lie in bed and toes upwards and pull legs up to tighten thights. do bum clenching and ankle turning. nothing else!!

      as you know since 2.5wks I am moving about,but will now incorporate your excersies into my daily routine.

      thanks and glad to hear what your achieving... that's all brilliant news. and I know to take things slowly

      i am amazed at how little guidance you have had!

      (4) basically get into a position that stretches the front of your hip

      also at 6 weeks i was told to do step ups - step up on the bottom step of the stairs bring the other leg up and then step off with the first leg , tap the other leg and step up with that so that you are alternating legs

      also clams - lying on your side with your legs bent, keeping the feet together open the knees. This one is quite hard if you cant lift your leg to the side

      i just googled there is a quite good guide on Heartland orthopedic hospital website - as you havent done a lot of the exercises you might want to start with the earlier ones?

      I would go to your GP and insist on a referral to musculo-skeletal

      getting to see gp I'd hard at my surgery....

      I havent tried going on my side as unsure if can or not and heard horror stories of people sleeping on their sides early on....

      I might try going on my side, but which side do you try first?

      honestly I dont really notice my hip on day to day basis but yes I've had no support since leaving hospital. or from the hospital by sounds of it.

    lie on your unoperated side with a pillow between your legs. if you are nervous, put the pillow between your legs and then roll over
