should i be on warfarin longer?

I was diagnosed with dvt 4 weeks ago in right calf. When I came out of hospital it took over 2 wks for my blood to get to 2.0 and in that time I got same symptoms in left leg. I didn't go back to the hospital cause I was already on meds but I was told 12 weeks for the dvt they found originally, should it be longer as I had another? Everyone I read about with dvt is on for 6 months minimum. They said it was due to depro injection and possibly cause I have brca1 gene. I have lots of pains, nausea and anxiety taking this drug, any advice would be great!

    Hi,

I had a DVT in my left calf Oct 2013. I was on warfarin for 6 months which I was told was the minimum time and if I had another it would be for life. I have had a couple of episodes of thrombophebitis and was given clexane for that. My leg has never felt the same since. It sometimes feels numb and painful and uncomfortable. It's hard to tell yourself that everything is ok. I feel there should be more follow up after you stop taking warfarin as the anxiety is awful.

Hi, thanks for your reply, I just feel and from what I have read 3 months just isn't long enough for having more clots after being discharged from hospital. My second bout is worse than the first, started in my calf, moved to thigh and now feel like it's in my groin. I'm seeing my gp tomorrow and I'm going to see if he can get in touch with the consultant to find out. The anticoagulant clinic told me to get in touch but he was a ward consultant so not sure how to get in touch. I agree about the anxiety, I broke down at the clinic cause I was told nothing and was scared when told if my blood went over 3 and I had a nosebleed to get to a&e. The whole thing is scary. I've never been ill seriously in 41 yrs. Fingers crossed it won't happen again, the drug is horrible!

Oh, try not to worry. My blood went to 4.2 at one time but I was having regulat blood tests and they rang from the anticoagulant clinic to say cut down my tablets. I live in Bristol and the hospital has been marvellous. You can ask for a D Dimer test or a scan to see if you have another clot. Keep on to them.

I'm trying not to worry, I need to stop reading scary stories, would be nice if there were more good outcome stories. I will keep on and hopefully things will turn out good. Im glad I came onto this site and had your response. I'm feeling a bit more cheery!

Hi hope you are better now but if not see my posts on dvt and post thrombotic syndrome. MY son has pts and has been referred to Guys and St Thomas in London and will have treatment for pain and swelling in his leg after massive dvt post surgery.

      hope this helps.
