Sorry you're feeling so poorly. That doesn't sound right, especially the numbness. I get extremely fatigued with IBS as well and do get radiating pain in my lower spine and left leg, but it's localised. What you're describing sounds more like a problem high up in your spinal column. Try to rest and make sure you describe all your symptoms, they may give you checkups. They gave me a CT scan and MRI as well as a chest X-ray before they settled on IBS.

I have suffered from the symptoms you mention and have an auto immune disorder. Ask your gp to run blood tests. check b12 check ana esr and crp in your blood. they don't do this as a matter 9f course. I went all around the houses with this for years and it got progressively worse. But a big offender with these symptoms is also b12 issues which I also had. Be thorough. Or at least ask your GP to be.Not responding to symptoms is sadly v common but not something you have to put up with. x

hi people who replied om here, i asked for a second opinion yesterday and my doctor's answer a virus. i am really not overly impressed by this, it would be right to think i would get anything coming out of hospital, but my doctor wouldn't retest my b12, i am veggie with ibs and a stripped diet with b12 levels really low. i have read the signs of b12 deficiency and am now coming to the conclusion that this is what this is? does ibs go hand in hand with b12 deficiency and vice versa? how can those of you who have it tell? please advise me. i don't feel virusey but my sinuses do hurt? oh just monitor it! that was my doctor's comment. i can't win they either dump you on antidepressants or they are convinced everything can be put down to a virus. after 7 years of gradually deteriorating health, there's something a miss. can i ask 1 more question off those with b12 deficiency - can you tear your toe or fingernails out? i can!

what is your b12 level? Do you have blood test results? And vit d has that been tested? If nails are weak that should be looked at too.

If your nails are weak make sure your diet is properly balanced. You need to eat combinations of proteins from cereals and legumes when not eating meat. Also make sure your calcium levels are ok. Taking a course of multivitamins might help you feel well enough to look into and tweak your diet so it's providing all that you need. Is your hair brittle? That can be another sign. Certainly extreme fatigue can be caused by a vitamin deficiency and this could be affecting your immune functionality so that a virus is making you sicker than it normally would.

hi, thanks for your reply - i have seen my doctor since and she thinks my b12 is high enough, according to last year's figures

to my mind this is not good enough i know there's something going on, you know yourself! i know my toenails tear, i just am making my doctors do everything j can to get my life back. at least they didn't find cxxxxx

oh to the kind person who mentioned legumes, they make me really sick!i think i am probably allergic to them.

Your legume intolerance may be important to how you are feeling right now. Vegetarians need to get the two main groups of proteins that are present in meat via a different route. Cereals contain one of these protein groups that your body needs, and legumes contain the other. So, if you can't eat legumes, you'll need to seek those proteins elsewhere or you will become malnourished. Tofu is one good source and another is quinoa. Nutritional yeast could help increase your vitamin B intake, and to build up calcium you could either try supplements or increase your dairy intake.

do you know emma i have seen a dietitian for years and she's never mentiioned this it makes my blood boil!

You may be exhausted after the sedation which is normal. Stress can cause this. I didn't have exhaustion after my endoscopy and didn't have the need to rest. My side effects were a lot worse than exhaustion.

Brittle nails can be down to poor calcium levels, anemia or an under active thyroid. Maybe ask for a thyroid test. While getting a virus is unfortunately a common occurrence after being in hospital, doctors often suggest a virus when they don't know the answer.

thanks pippa, but this now feels sinusey! my face hurts, dizziness and room spinning too, i suffer with vertigo, labyrinthitis and sinus problems often, felt bunged up and sore throat before i went in to hospital. awaiting hospital appointment for sinus/trapped facial nerves on 11th may anyway, now like with so called ibs diagnosis (it's what i called a poor viral defintion of unexplained stomach/bowel problems), it drives me mad. i gave this new doctors 2 problems to sort out - sinuses and bowel/kidney issues. let's see.....

Sinuses are linked to the ears so that may play a part in the dizziness too. When do you get the results of your endoscopy?

i know it's a damn nuisance but they WILL sort it. my gastroscope results came back clear for anything nasty, i have to wait 3-4 weeks for the biopsies. they're for coeliac disesse.i don't know what my doctors will do if the results are negative all the way through.

If they're negative, that's good news and means your diagnosis of IBS is accurate.

Once you get your biopsy results, if they are negative, your doctors will likely conclude you do have IBS.
