Should I get a card for the airport scanners?

I'm not worried about beeping at Australian airports, but am going to Colombia in December for my son's wedding. I wonder if I should get a card, translated into Spanish, explaining that I have a bloody great lump of metal inside me... any thoughts?

Or you could take a copy (photo on your phone) of your x-ray. That and the scar should satisfy most reasonable thinking people.

Oh, you said airport security, cancel my "reasonable thinking people" comment twisted

    Hi Belle

I had mine op at Mater Brisbane Private Hospital and sent me a plastic card to carry with all the details.

Maybe ask your hospital or surgeon

Will do. I asked at my first appointment, but the doc said I didn't need one. At that stage, there were no destination wedding plans. I have another appointment in May. Will ask again. Thanks.

I am hoping to get back to travelling asap and it has crossed my mind. My partner has metalwork in his legs but rarely sets the alarms off. Pre-hips I set them off every time!!

In Googling the question it seems that some people carry a card but the worst thing to endure may be a comprehensive pat down. I couldn't find any info on whether anyone had ever smuggled drugs in a hip implant!!!!

We used to be able to get them in the UK, but they have been discontinued as they are so easy to forge I suppose, and actually serve no useful purpose.  They will want to hand-scan and/or pat you down whatever.

When you get there, just say "I have a metal hip", they will understand, but do not expect them to smile.

I suppose I could just whip up my dress or drop my jeans and show them the scar...

The Colombia arrival/departure offers a language challenge, but at least I have time to learn how to say: "Yes, I'm packed. It's in my right hip"...

Or I could just ask the future in-laws to meet me at the airport and do all of the talking...
