Should I insint on Endoscopy?

Hello all,

I have been having stomach discomfort for about three months now. Been taking antibiotics 3 times during the past 12 months.

I have been diagnosed with candida albicans in my mouth and after treatment symptoms stayed the same. I had burping, mild reflux, dry mouth at night !! and in the morning, too, combined with white tongue coat, gas, bloated stomach and feeling of hunger (I was hungry every 2-3 hours but food didnt help)

Then my gastroenterologyst suggested I should do a endoscopy to see if there is a chance I had an infection in my GI tract. I didnt want to do it at the time because I believed

it’ s caused because of stress (the last year was pretty intense for me mentally)

I did a blood test for h.pylori and stool test and both turned out to be negative. Right after these testings I got a sinus infection and had been prescribed Duomox 500 for 7 days which I took. My stomach discomoforts were not bugging me during the treatment but right after I finished my AB course, my symptoms became worse. Then, I started taking coconut oil and probiotics every day and now my symptoms seem to be gone but my dry mouth at night and tongue coat stays. I have like a white discharge in my mouth on my inside cheeks and on my teeth when I wake up it is there. Also my sinuses are sometimes painful. My nose is congested at night (thats why my mouth is so dry)

I don’t know what to do. My Ear -nose- throat doctor suggested I may have allergies after the treatment but the sprays didnt help at all. I am confused. I know these discomforts might be caused by candida but my doc told me if my body was strong and healthy it would eliminate the candida.

Im not sure wether this is a sinus problem or a stomach problem but in both cases I must know what to do..

Hi there, well first off antibiotics clear our all of the good stuff so candidia is very common after being on them.  I am in the same boat as I have been having reflux issues for about 6 months, it at times gets better, but then comes back.  I too had h-pylori checked, fecal test was normal, heart tests normal and upper abdominal ultra sound is normal.  The doctors are thinking GERD, so I am trying to stick to a low acid diet.  I have always had chronic sinus issues, and white tongue since I was a kid.  I had my allergies tested over 20 years ago and I have environmental allergies....The last few years my post nasal drip has increased, and I get more sinus headaches now than I ever did......and now I have a lump feeling in my throat that comes and goes.  They suggested an endoscopy...but to me this is an invasive testing no matter what they say.  They only do it with sedation here which comes with its own risks.....once the weather settles I will be making a doctors appointment and see if I can be referred to an ENT specialist first....and then if I have to I will so a barium swallow test.

I have no problems with endoscopes so my suggestion is to have it done.   You do know we are all different so are you willing to try everything they suggest here and waste years (and your health) in the process?

I guess for me Knowing there are high risks involved getting one, I put it off....my aunts father, perfectly healthy man other than reflux issues.....went to have is endoscopy went in and never came back out alive, he died on the table.  I don't think it was the procedure, but the sedation...where we get them done they only do it by sedation....there is a reason they have you sign that paper before our have it done so they will not be reliable if anything happens.....it s rare yes, but there is a risk....there are times that endoscopes are neccesary....but if you can have other testing done that is less invasive why wouldn't you?

Sorry about your father, but there is risk on everything even taking supplements or foods. Anyone with chronic reflux ( GERD) should get one done in order to detect early Barretts, if not it could be to late when you know you have it.   Less invasive?  I don't think there is anything else that will tell you the same things an endescopy can. ;-(   Take care, God bless!

I understand what you are saying as far as Barrett's goes, however looking at it that way every human being should get one done because Barrett's can be there with no symptoms.   I believe if we all ate like we are supposed to, avoid alcohol, don't smoke, eliminate stress as much as humanly possible then we can reverse wha is going on inside our bodies.  When people get a diagnosis with Barrett's they are told to change their lifestyle meaning eating habits, but on acid reducers and have to come back to be checked on a regular basis.  There are people that have Barrett's that never developed cancer it is a precursor yes, just like anything else in the body.  My concern with all of this is people get tested go on ppi's and think they are safe.....more research needs to be done on long term ppi's and that they can cause stomach cancer....I will never say I will not get one done, but I will try diet and life style changes first and then go from there.   I think it is up to each individual.....for example my mother passed away from breast cancer so I go for annual mammograms, while many women say mammograms cause cancer....everyone has to do what they feel is best for themselves....cancer can grow anywhere in the body so if people are just focusing one one area that doesn't make sense to me.  I read somewhere where a gentleman went for routine colonoscopies.....but in the end developed stomach cancer and died....so I feel we all need to heal our bodies not just one area but the entire thing, ppi's only stop acid from getting into your esophagus.

I agree with you 100%.  Just today I got done a Heidelberg reflux test which shows I have low acid levels so GI's have been telling me to take PPI's for the rest of my life when is actually the contrary.   Now, my GI even if he knows my problem could have been low acid levels he prescribed me PPI's.  I even told him I had SIBO (2 positive test) and he still insisted that I needed to take PPIs knowing that low acid levels is a BIG welcome sign for SIBO and many other bacterial problems. ;-(

Hi. Im very interested how u found out that u have SIBO?

I read somewhere it could be a contributory factor to reflux.

Have u found what works for u or still searching for proper trigger to put things right?

Has SIBO diet worked for u thats if u tried it.

Im asking as had what apears reflux and swollen tummy for a yr and no definitive diagnosis.

And i had many blood tests, allergy tests, endoscopy, xrays , ct scan...

      Im still no wiser.

      Hi,

      1.  I took the breathing test at home twice and both times came out pisitive. They gave me anti-biotics for this and when I took the test again it was worse. ;-(

      2. Yes, SIBO can be the reason for reflux and everything else I have. Chest pain and breathing problems.  That is why I want to end this SIBO but GI does not support my believe even with the 2 breathing SIBO test.

      3. Not really, but right now I believe that normalizing my stomach acid levels will take care of the SIBO as well because SIBO can't survive on an acidic environmental. Juts in case, I do have Biocidin (Recommended by functional medicine) which I will start soon.

      4.  I tried the LOW FODMAP diet and didn't do much. Now going on the reflux diet with very little meat and lots of veggies and fruits (organic)

      5. Same here, every test in the book with no clear answer.  What I know for sure now is that I have low acid levels so I have to deal with this in a different way without PPI's.

      Hi,

You can get it for free from your GI.  He will give it to you and you do the test at home and mail it out. He will get the results.

We are all different when it comes to diet so this is a trial all the time looking for what is best for us.

      Jose

I would most definitely have an endoscopy done...it goes real quick and I've had no pain at all afterwards even though they took biopsies. In Germany, they usually do them under sedation, but I've also had one without. It wasn't pleasant when they put the tube down my throat and all the yucky belching and the smell! I've had 6 candida infections within 6 months and can understand your concern - candida and reflux seem to go hand in hand unfortunately. They have caused me alot of distress. Please take care of yourself and get these things looked into!
