Should I return home from internship abroad?

Hello,

I'm from Europe now in the US for an internship in a university research lab.

I have two months left but since June I continue to overthink about every problem in my daily life. This week for example I stayed 3 days in front of my PC reading almost the same stuff but without focusing. I would like to do other stuff when I return home, like preparing me for job interviews and stuff but I'm too tired and i fell asleep.

Sometimes I've got hard anxiety-like crises involving little problems.

What I would like to do is talk to my supervisor (i'm in a project between my home uni and the one in US) and ask if I can return to my home country, take a week break and continue my thesis at home, because two months look like a very long time for me.

Do you think that it would be reasonable to ask for this and if yes how can I tell him that I'm struggling/suffering?

Thank you in advance.

    Hi,

It's hard for anybody else to say really. Only you know the extent of what you are going through.

All I can say from the perspective of an older person is that I regret a lot of things that I didn't do because of anxiety.

So I would ask myself a couple of questions. Is the anxiety because you are homesick and will it disappear if you return to Europe? what is the real reason for this anxiety?

If you finally decide to speak to your supervisor I think the best way forward will be to tell him/her the truth (that's why it's also good to ask yourself those questions, that way you will be more aware of the reason so that you can put it to him/her). Also, sometimes just bringing a subject out into the open can help decrease anxiety and the feeling of being trapped.

I wish you all the best!
