I would say you don't need AA. and I would refuse to take it. Particularly in view of the multiple contraindications you have.

Your t-scores are all near enough normal - most people our age have some osteopenia and yours is about the same as mine, a long long way from osteoporosis.. I have been on pred for 10 years, after 7 years my t-scores had changed about as much as yours have. - I'm still not taking AA.

I assume you have been taking calcium and vit D? And have a read of this:

I assume it must be on this site but I can't find a link quickly.

Eileen many thanks for your quick reply, i am only taking Vit d suoolement, as last year my doctor said i eat enough calcium, but the lady who did my scan said i should be given supplements from my doctor, so that is another question to ask her.

I will read the site you have found, and priny a copy for her.

Once again many thanks, hope you and your OH are well, you are an insperation to us all. take care regards Margaret

It's by Anhaga who posts here, just on another forum.

It beats me how medics aren't aware of the studies that show calcium plus vit D can be enough to reduce the loss of bone density that MAY happen with pred. It isn;t a case of "you eat plenty of calcium", it's that you need extra because pred makes you lose it through your kidneys, having extra available is a good thing.

Have a read of the link Eileen sent you. It is my story. it is not best medical practice to prescribe bone meds for only osteopenia, whether or not you are on a medication which may cause bone thinning so no one should be suggesting you take any of the bone drugs at this point. What you should be getting is advice about achieving the best nutritional status for bone health and guidance concerning appropriate exercise.

Do you know what I found today? That patients on pred AND bisphosphonates are at an increased risk of developing jaw osteonecrosis. Ho hum I thought ...

Oh great. Another thing to keep in mind. Who's going to tell the doctors? On the HU site there is a new American bone forum and a person posted on there a really interesting study, very long I haven't read the whole thing, about how drug companies are infiltrating all levels of treatment and as we know influencing medical professionals often to our detriment. One third of deaths in both Canada and the US can be attributed to medical error.

excuse my ignorance, but what bisphosphonates are we talking about.

it's a whole class of medication, including alendronic acid, zoledronic acid, risedronate, ibandronate, and a couple of others.
