Shoulder bursitis/impingement..cured with physio?

Hi all,

I posted on here several weeks back as I have shoulder bursitis with impingement since January 2016..arghhhh!! I had said I had tried rest, ice ultrasound, ineffectual physio  & cortisone to no effect. In desperation I found a YouTube video that thank goodness helped me with stretches & exercises to start providing relief. This prompted me to find a decent sports physio and pursue the physio route properly to correct this horrible and persistent  condition. I have full ROM but crappy inflammatory pain that will just flare up if I overdo it like I did on Saturday by helping to move something that was maybe a bit too heavy, at the time I had no

pain and didn't strain myself. Ok, my question is, have any of you had this,or know someone who has pursued a  physio regime and got better...permanently? With no flare ups. I know this is a long path ahead, but because of this recent flare up of pain after doing well, I'm so frustrated. I know I'm having to work on Structural issues in the shoulder and correct them, this takes time but it's a downer when you have these "set backs". Onwards & upwards though. Be great to hear from someone who has recovered from this, not sure if they would even be on these forums!!!

Hi Susan - I feel your pain - quite literally.  I think you have a point when you say people who have recovered probably don't post on forums but given the horrible time I have had for what seems like years now, I think I would write the whole post in capital letters to give some hope to fellow sufferers.  I had the same issue as you and although was only expecting the SAD procedure when I had open surgery, I also ended up wth a repair to the rotator cuff (3cm).  The operation apparently went well, I followed instructions completely, attended all of the physio sessions and have full range of movement (apart from maybe the bra strap movement, but it isn't bad).  However, after each physio session when I was given increasingly challenging exercises, I would have a flare up of pain again.  I took advice, tried swimming, went back to the gym; all of these activities were painless but a pain flare up always followed.  Surgery was getting on for nine months ago now and I am yet to have a decent night's sleep.  I also had tennis elbow before and after surgery, and during the night I feel the tingling of that particular issue returning.  I can cope during the day but the night pain is becoming unbearable.  I saw a Chinese therapist who used acupuncture and wet cupping and I think it helped.  I also had my shoulder strapped to see if improved posture would make a difference.  It may have done - a little.  I have had a couple of massages and I think they have maybe been the most useful.  Today I have an appointment with a chiropractor and I am going to see if maybe there is something else going on, such as my neck not aligned properly.  I have just turned 60 and in all other aspects am pretty healthy but the lack of sleep is having a serious impact on my life.  Odd thing is, after being upright for ten minutes the pain subsides.  Rest assured if I find any relief from this shoulder thing I WILL most definitely post.

      Hi Jaycee,

Thanks for replying. That's what concerns me about having surgery, having the surgeon find other issues "fixing them" and the unknown after that with recovery & healing.

It seems not everything shows up on ultrasounds and even mris. I had ultrasounds done with no tears showing.

I hope you find some help with your shoulder and get some sleep! I'm sleeping OK but I've two young children to wear me out so that may contribute to me just zonking outsmile

I have had an X-ray a  Ultra Sound and just recently had an MRI findings suggest subacromial impingement with possible bursitis and moderate supraspinatus tendinopathy fluid within the subacromial  subdeltoid bursa OA and sclerosis and bone spurs.

I am too at my wits end. I am a 52 year old cashier. I have had all possible treatments and finally I am having right shoulder arthroscopic debridement, acromioplasty and possible rotator cuff repair, Work Safe has been fighting me on this even though I have been a cashier for 30 years. I will have it done even if WCB doesn't approve it. I have sent in my ECG and all my paper work.  I will let you know how I make out I am still working but only 4 hour shifts as that is all I can handle with the pain and having hardly any sleep.

      Hi Kellie,

All the best for your surgery and a speedy recovery. How frustrating for you with the work cover situation, it's ridiculous that they are making it so hard for you.

I have had a bad few days with this crap pain as I over did it but it's calmed down and I'm persisting with the physio regime. Time & patience seems to be key with this S#$&&# condition, but frequently I just get so over it.
