    Hi Carol,

I had shots in my sternum, and other areas from athletic accidents, when I was younger, and on rare occasions, now, I get shots in lower back, due to age related problems, and they, most times, give me respite, for 4 1/2 - 6 months, so I can function, normally, for a while.

This has become essential for my mental health.

First, I should tell you, most shots, effective, or not, do hurt.

i guess it's a matter of lesser of 2 evils.

The shots are also comprised of some sort of corticosteroid, like prednisone, but they hopefully go directly to the source of pain.

One thing I am concerned about, is if you are in pain in other ares, as well,

perhaps you are not taking an appropriate amount of prednisone, to alleviate pain, in the first place.  You might try to up your dose, till you feel more comfortable, all over your body, and work to decrease the dosage, slowly.

In any event, you should consult with your Rheumotologist, first.

Wishing you a pain free life.

As a side-light, possibly unrelated to a shoulder shot....I get SynviscOne shots in my knees every 6 months, no problem...except last time they added some cortisone...thought it would help...but instead I had menstrual bleeding for a month!! No more cortisone for me!

Hi, Just wondering when you said you got the shots and they lasted 4.5 to 6 months did you mean you had no shots in between that time?

I am having chronic lower back pain, been going on far to long 4 months, on 35mg Preds a day. I intend to speak to my Dr about looking at shots to help me function :  Thanks

      Hi Dea,

I found a doctor ( happened to be a rheumatologist), who specialized in using  ultrSound guided shots, and was usually successful at hitting the right spot

I have been  lucky enough to play sports, do  excercises, and most important, without back pain, for about 4 1/2 months

Living with the ups and downs of PMR is tough enough, without having chronic and very debilitating back pain.

I hope you feel much better.

At my initial diagnosis, the rheumy injected my shoulders with cortisone and I think it's mixed with lidocaine.  The shots "stung" initially but provided tremendous relief for the PMR pain in my shoulders within 48 hours.  (This was in addition to starting oral pred at the same time).   I've since had another injection in my shoulders (several months after the first) and again experienced significant relief.
