Showing of Veins

I have developed blueish veins popping out just below my knee at the back of my legs. I am 39. I also used to stand and walk for longer hours. I first ignored it but it's starting to look ugly now. what can I do about this? Should I see a doctor?

yes you are  based in USA so I cannot comment upon what is available to you.

What I will tell you is that the support tights bought from Boots the national pharmasist in  GB state that they are clinically proven to aid circulation and healthy legs as a result. They say - do not add fabic conditioner when washing as it destroys the strengthening or pressure factor.

You really do not need any invasive therapy at this stage - just try the tights or socks if the veins are at the very lower limbs or tights if higher but also lower limbs as in anything from ankle to back of knee you need tights!.

Yes. Similar story to yours. Sorry popped up right in the middle. Please let me know of anything you findout about a good brand of compression socks. But doctor also suggested to first try it out and that I dont need a surgery

Silvia - thanks for joining - If the v veins are new then definately try support tights to prevent new ones from building and to aid the circulation in your legs. Your doctor was right to advise no surgery! I live in Uk and good chemists / pharmacists sell them over the counter! So I am certain you will get them IN US or online. Believe me if the varicose veins are new you do not need compression socks / tights - just 'support' ones! Not as thick or invasive - just look like normal tights but with areas of support that you never see!

      Hi Kate,

I have started to use a pair of compression socks. It's been 3 weeks now. It helped reduce the pain but its been really hard to put on. I have a time in the mornings. How did it go with your support tights? Do you think I should switch to support tights as well? or do you know of any brand of socks which are easy to get into?

      Hi Evangeline

I wear the tights every day and as the weeks have gone by I rarely get any pain or discomfort just the odd twinge now and again. The attached photos are of support tights which look no different to ordinary tights or panty hose as you perhaps call them in your country. The difference though is that they have different levels of built in support from ankle then to calf then to thigh but you cannot see it. Compression hose or socks are thicker and are for more severe varicose veins and so far I have not needed that level of support fortunately. In the UK as I have said before they are available to buy without prescription from Pharmacies so best advice I can give is to go into any drug store and ask the paharmasist to suggest what would best suit you.

Thanks a lot Kate. Your support tights look very comfy and stretchy. I will reach a local pharmacy.

I tried the support stockings on and off over the years. Very itchy and uncomfortable, especially during the summer. I had EVLA on my right leg 2 months ago, under local anaesthetic. It was quite painful during recovery (I had a lot of veins that also needed removing manually). 1 week ago I had EVLA on my left leg, much less painful. I would definitely recommend going down the laser route. I already feel so much better. Only downside for me at the moment is that my ankle swells if I am sat down for too long.

    Good luck!

Hi Jane - I think we need to know what we are talking about here re supprt stockings.

There are ones called compression hose and ones called support tights - the tights available in UK are not itchy or thick - just like ones you would wear to go out in with a skirt but just more like 30 denier so give your legs a good look while supporting the veins but not ugly or obvious! I agree in height of summer who would want to wear tights of any sort but if you wear them for part of the day then when push comes to shove - take them off! I am talking for people newly diagnosed with V / veins and to prevent further ones not people who have opted for surgery or any other method.

      Hi Jane,

Ankle swelling is usually due to inactivity of leg muscles. What you can try is to do minor exercises while you are seated. It is recommended to flex your feet forwards and backwards in a 2 seconds cycle for few minutes. You can try this once every hour or half an hour. The impact on the calf muscle will enhance blood flow and help reduce ankle swelling.

Or else you can try compression sleeves or socks. Compression of the leg muscles also ehnace blood flow and can help you solve your issue.

      Hope this helps

I am in the same position as yourself and I would advise you to do as I did and see your doctor.  At present I am waiting to go for an ultrasound on my leg and have been given Hirudoid cream which has helped somewhat.  I know from ignoring that things will only get worse so eventally I went to docs.  Could be something could be nothing but best to find out.  Very best of luck.
