side effects after TIA?

Posted , 10 users are following.

I had my first ?Tia back in July 2014 which affected my right side from head to foot, weakness, slurred speech and vision, I was then treated for this and stayed in hospital for 24 hours,Which I now get a numb patch on my right side of my face, which sort of comes and goes and is now concerning but I then had another TIA but my left side was affected this time, weakness, speech, vision, confusion. I had CT's MRI'S, dopler scans and seemed "normal", but this time i had to be thrombolised and addmitted to the Stroke unit for 24 hours. This really is starting to worry me, i am not seeing my consultant until 3/12, what else can I do? (please excuse any spelling, grammer mistakes)

Hi Gavin, sorry to hear you are feeling so unwell and getting no answers. I went to the hospital in November thinking I had an ear infection, my right side of my face was numb as was my ear and my eye was droopy. I was told I had had a stroke and was admitted for 5 days, I have since had to call an ambulance twice only to be sent home. I now have, like you slight numbness to my face, I also have stuttering speech and my eye is still droopy, I am also getting chest pains and daily headaches. I saw a stroke consultant yesterday who is sending me to a neurologist as he says I should not have the headaches or droopy eye, all very worrying, I have had a 24hour heart monitor but now I also need an echocardiogram. So hopefully you will get some answers when you see your consultant. How old are you?

Hi Gavin, sorry to hear you're having such problems, the worrying about your health can add to the stress and as Winnie as said stress is not good, its a killer.  A TIA is as the name suggests, usually 'transient', ie no long term remaining effects.  It's given the name 'mini stroke' but not to be confused with 'minor stroke' which is a lesser version of a proper stroke and not a transient attack.  Waiting til March for appointment is going to be a very anxious time for you. Go back to them and pressurise for an earlier appointment or cancellation, at least if you get seen sooner it will take some stress off your shoulders.

      Hi Loxie,

I had to go to my GP as I have right side numbness in my face to foot, and still not heard anything from the hospital, so my GP has sent an urgent request, and I will phone them tomorrow :-/

    Hi Gavin,

sorry to hear about this, What medication did they put you on after your first TIA, I had one the beginning of November and I must admit the after effects ie numb face and arm stayed with me for quite a while after, they say that with TIA all disappears straight away! Don't think that is always the case, It is a long time to wait for app, they so slow, I haven't had my follow up yet and it's been nearly 3 months

Hi Karen, I have had these symptoms as well, and I too am still waiting to be seen. I take Clopidogrel 75mg at present, and still have tiny attacks now and then, and they said that I cannot keep having these?! oh sorry am I only allowed 2! my uncle has had 5!, and they keep saying you are far too young to have these, What has age got to do with it?!! makes me angry.

    Hi Gavin

I'm sorry to hear your not feeling good.  Do you really have to wait until 3 December or is your appointment on 12 March?

In the meantime all you can do is try not to worry (I know - much easier said than done) and also take a mini aspirin daily.  You may find that you are prescribed this by your consultant so you can be one step ahead wink

Let us know how you get on.

Hi Gavin - That's good that you are on Clopidogrel.  I am also on that but my mother takes Warfarin which is a pain as it must be constantly monitored to ensure the correct doseage.  We have a genetic disease known as Fabry.  I found out in 2012 after years of being told that I was suffering from MS.  MS can present itself like strokes but you'd think that consultants etc would know this - well they do at University College hospital, thank goodness! Yes, please keep me updated smile
