Side effects of medication

Posted , 6 users are following.

I started having symptoms about 8 months ago and for the past 6 months been on gabapentin. I've had terrible side effects mostly falling asleep and confusion. After speaking to three different doctors and a consultant, I've been given tegretol. I'm worried about taking it. What's everyone else's experience?

I've been on epitol (carbmazepine) for 9 years. It worked very well with minimal side effects, unless your pain worsens and the dosage becomes quite high. It's usually the first line of treatment for TN, so I'd definitely give it a try.

I was diagnosed with Trigeminal Neuropathy last year.  They put me on Tegretol, to which I had a terrible reaction. My platelet level went way down, from over 200K to 31K, and I developed a fever.  I got dizzy and fell in the shower.  I was very sick.  So, they took me off it.  It is okay to take, but just watch yourself very carefully and have your blood tested if you are really concerned.

    Hi Sarah

i have been prescribed carbmazepine and don't seem to be suffering from any side effects.  My doctor started me on 100mg twice a day.  You can go up to a maximum of 1200mg a day if required.

    Best regards

I found the Tegratol caused me more side affects than the Gabapentin, but everyone is different, so it's worth a try I have been on Gabapentin for a couple of months now and am just about overcoming the side affects. I haven't felt able to drive or work since going on a higher dose, but I think I'm just about levelling out now and hope to go back to work sometime next week.

      Hi Louisa

thats good to here I am sure you are eager to get back to normal.  The carbmazepine seems to be working for me.  Still get the odd electric shock type pain soothing up my face but nothing like before when it was constant. I just needed to open my mouth to wide or talk to much and pain was unbearable.

I li hope thing continue to improve for you.

      Dawn x

I have just starting taking tegretol and I have experienced complete relief from my pain but I am experiencing some side effects. I'm tired frequently and can feel mentally not alert. I have been sick to my stomach and thrown up a few times but my doctor is fairly confident that it will all start to settle once my body adjusts to the medication. So I would give it a few weeks and see how you go. Even with the way I feel now that's way better than suffering from the crippling pain I had.

I do hope you feel better soon. The side affects are horrible but like you say somewhat better than being in pain. I started to worry I was starting with the early onset of dementia, but I'm hoping it is the medication!
