Silicon for bones? Drink beer? Anyone heard this before?

Posted , 6 users are following.

Just read about this and thought there is so much we do not know and how interesting it is. Drinking a glass of beer a day could help our bones because of the silicon in it. Not to be confused with silicone which is a type of plastic though!

Exercise is now being touted as well as building bone.

Unfortunately, I hate beer and do not do enough exercise.

I do have calcium, magnesium, vitamin D3, vitamin K2, so what other natural things can we do? Obviously, the list is growing!

I think we get silica from nuts, avocadoesoats and several other common foods, ues, including beer!

What else could you do?  I think eating more fermented foods is a good idea.  If you are not accustomed to them it's a good idea to introduce them slowly so that the digestive system can adjust. These include the ubiquitous yoghurt, of course, but also kefir, miso, many kinds of fermented vegetables like sauerkraut, kimchi, curtido, etc.

Thanks Anhaga! Amongst the lovely diseases I possess is diverticulitis so almonds are out unfortunately. I love avocados and we used to own seven trees which were covered in avocados but they are long gone unfortunately.

I am trialling not having porridge every morning after having it religiously for years.

I think the fermented stuff might be out as well.

I have Crohns too so my choices are limited. I balance this with diabetes

You would think I would have popped the AA without a second thought but I did pause which was odd for me when I need so many other medicines.

Avocados are in, however, although a bit dear at the moment in Australis.

Let us keep on researching and fighting the good fight.

I also have diverticulitis so I won't have fermented or spicy. Crohns is one thing and nuts is okay for that. Unfortunately, it is the diverticulitis that is causing the issues at present. The Crohns is well controlled with medication as is the diabetes. Fun, lol!

Hi Kathleen,  Sorry I don't know about a daily glass of beer (never drink it) but am interested about vitamin K2 which I gather helps to absorb the calcium into the bones. Apart from specialised Japanese food ( not readily available) can you tell me where a good source of K2 is obtainable?  Like you I now am trying to rectify my health problems naturally.

I get K2 supplement derived from natto at local organic foods store.  Possible food sources include products of GRASS fed animals (not grain fed, nor "finished" with grain) including poultry.  Also we may get some from fermented foods (krauts, etc)  and cheeses like brie.  It is now being included in some of the special bone supplements, beyond the usual D3 and magnesium.

Anhaga and Evelyn59 , this is such a helpful discussion. Thank you I will look out for grass fed food products and try and find a natural health food store. I am doing everything I can to avoid a yearly injection as prescribed by my doctor. My osteoporosis is now at severe level. I am determined to sort this out as naturally as poss especially as my dentist advised against the injection because of ONJ.

It's not an easy journey, is it?  Are you doing some of the gentle exercise things, like tai chi and walking?  I think the main thing to be careful of is not to twist the spine, especially if you are lifting something (including yourself from a chair!) and the beauty of tai chi is, as I've just been finding for myself, it's brilliant at improving balance.

Yes - taking everything on board but walking difficult as have osteo arthritis in my silly old knee. Agree about balance tho' and so practise balancing moves and other gentle forms of exercise plus trying when possible to sit out in sun for 15 minutes each day for calm, listen to birds, smell flowers and hopefully catch some vitamin D.  Theses forums are wonderful and very humbling when I find other peop;e have done so much more research than I.  Good luck

Sounds like you are doing a lot of things right.  Sometimes the very best thing is taking time to enjoy the world around us. 💚

If you put your arms straight out in front of you when rising from a chair it makes it easier and safer.

Another trick my husband taught me is to open your mouth and throat when you sneeze. I do this all the time now after my back hurt when I sneezed and I suspect that is when my bulging discs happened.

Yoghurt is one. Some other dairy is too. Being in different countries means  some foods may have it included in a particular country but not another. I know margarines used to but then butter has now become the better option. I take a vitamin K2 pill. It is just a soft one similar to vitamin D. Check the ingredients on products you buy.

I take magnesium too and find that it has stopped the night cramps.
