Simvastatin..

I am now totally confused, after refusing to take Statins for 1 year, and seeing at least 4 different doctors who have all told me that I must take Statins, I have just arrived home with a prescription for Simvastatin, I really would prefer not to take it, but listening to the Doctors have given in. My Cholestral is 5.8. Can anyone give any advise please.

I was put on Atorvastin. I couldn't bring myself to take the tablets after reading so much about the side effects, very scary.

    This is what I did

Every morning I have rough porridge with blueberries

Lunch.... I had home made vegetable soup .... with a slice of seedy bread with proactive spread plus Benecol or proactive drink. or mackerel sandwich and Benecol drink.

Evening meal ..... chicken or fish with more veggies

In-between meals. apples, figs, nuts, I love almonds there the best, dates and oranges.

I cut out added sugar completely. lots of water.

In the evening a small bowl of oat bran about 25 grams. made with water, takes a couple of minutes to make.

I am 67, I lost 7 lbs in weight, and yesterday my cholesterol was 5.7.

So from February 5 ....8.6. to March 21..... am now 5.7. It was quite strict what I ate, but I never felt hungry, and I actually enjoyed my food, I feel healthier, but most important I did it without Statins.

No side effects. oh and I used to have flashes in both eyes, one eye no flashes at all and the other hardly any now.

If this helps you ...... or anyone ....... Good luck.

sorry, my ipad is playing up a bit.      just like to say that my previous post was last year but I have kept my colestrol down, generally I am a lot healthier, I do eat lots of fruit and veg and love my porridge in the mornings and have flora spreads always and every other day a pro activ drink.   I made it quite strict to begin with but I have to say I never felt so well except for the worry of what my doctor said. But now I have cut out added sugar and keep salt to a minimum and get on with life. After learning about Statins, I knew, for me personally they were not for me.    good luck

    Hi Sandyg

I took Simvastatin and came off it after pain and severe loss of use to my arms. That was a few years ago. I too am now under pressure to try another as my level is 7.9. I am trying again to get it down with diet as I got it down to 6.5 previously . I'm really scared of taking any more statins as my sister has tried 3 kinds and ended up in hospital and I think I may have family high colesterol as I couldn't get it lower then 6 even with statins.

You say that 4 doctors have pressurised you into taking a statin but not whether there are other risk factors for you other than the level of your colesterol.

Doctors should be looking at your risk fo a heart attack or stroke taking into account all the relevant factors in your particular case and it needs to be understood where the role of colesterol at 5.8 is in that picture. Did they try to get you to get it down with diet like people here are suggesting?

And by the way, my mother-in-law has taken it for years and is fine. Not an easy choice for us, particularly if we've already had one with bad side effects- I've joined this discussion because I don't think we are being told enough. Good luck
