Sitting on Chairs When Going Out

Posted , 11 users are following.

Are the precautions for sitting on lower chairs really 3 months? I have children who are very involved in sports and wondering if it's safe to sit on bleachers and lower chairs? I can bring a pillow but a pillow still doesn't make the chair high. Anyone have any experience with this? I'm just about 4 weeks post op bilateral.

Thanks for any help you can provide!

Precautions vary from surgeon to surgeon. I had a 90 degree bending restriction for 6 weeks, which prevented me from sitting in low seats for 6 weeks. Afterwards, I was allowed do what was comfortable. You could use a cushion, instead of a pillow on a low chair. They give more support and could hold you up a couple of inches higher, depending on the cushion.

Yes I think taking a cushion would be good. I sometimes sat on lower seats after about about a month. I had some days out by the sea, and I used to sit down very carefully, and stick my legs out in front. ( But I only had one hip done.) Best of luck with your recovery.

It all depends on whether you had anterior or posterior approach. Anterior approach has very few restrictions, posterior approach has resterictions for up to 3 months to prevent dislocation.

I had posterior so I only know my own restrictions, but I would advise you take your restrictions given to you very seriously , don't take any risks it's not worth risking your health and new hip , take good care of yourself. Xxxx

I had an anterior approach and my surgeon gave me no restrictions.  The physical therapist, though, said to avoid 90 degree bending for 6 weeks.  I'm almost three weeks after surgery and have absoutely no issues bending beyond 90 degrees.

Yes I can only manage lower chairs with some difficulty at 3 months so I think that is probably about right ! X

Posterior approach. Restrictions lifted at the 6 week mark.

I had posterior approach as well. 6 weeks of keeping my hips above my legs while sitting , no bending more than 90 degrees, and no rocking forward to get up from sitting. I took a cushion with me. I was told it was to prevent dislocations.

    hi kim,

4 weeks post-op of bi-lateral hip replacement surgery is early in recovery ... as said here before, depending on the approach of this surgery and what  was advised bu your surgeon ...

You don't want to risk anything at this point ... it is not only the sitting but to sit down and getting up from bleechers --- you will need a big cushion but also some arm support to push your self up from sitting position ...

please let us know how you are getting on okay ?

    love to hear more

    big warm hug

It's almost impossible to avoid having to sit on a low chair from time to time. I just suck my bad leg out in front and tried to get up and down on one leg. I'd have thought that very difficult on bleachers and depending how tall you are your hip might well be at less than 90 degrees. If you haven't been done yet I'd experiment. And if you can get someone to help it would also help.
