Sitting uncomfortably

Posted , 7 users are following.

Hi all,

Almost 4 months post THR I am still finding sitting in the car uncomfortable. The most I have travelled is about an hour.Have had 3 sessions with osteopath and have improved but still sitting on dining chairs with a cushion when visiting friends. Can anyone relate to this and will it get better?

I need to decide whether to have the other hip done next year but want full recovery first

    Hi Janet.

I am 5 weeks Post op after having a LTHR.

I am sorry to hear you are still having trouble with sitting and driving. For myself, I have had no trouble with sitting. A sit on a low sofa now and have been very comfortable driving for about 1 week.

Hope you heal a bit faster.

Completely!  I am 5 months post opp. Take my trusty cushion to friends houses. I can drive up to an hour. But am then stiff getting out of the car. I am lucky that I have an old Volvo with very comfy seats and also heated seats!  It is getting better, the Physio said that it is due to losing muscle mass. You can feel your "sit" bones.

Lots of butt clenches and Clam exercises will get us there.

I am also in the same position with my other hip and like you want to wait until the first one is completely healed.

My Consultant said that it can take up to a year, a Hip Surgeon friend of his had it done and he was surprised how long all the soft tissues take to fully heal.

I work as a Community O.T. So lots of driving. I do butt clenches in the car!

Sounds like you are doing really well. We will get there. I am thinking next September for my next THR. Unless it gets suddenly a lot worse!

At 10 months post revision, I still have a lamp-post in my backside - well that's what it feels like eek

I am going to try to get my old sports physio to give the scar tissue a good deep massage - see if that improves it - I will report back on my progress.

It's worth getting him to show you how to self-massage. It isn't hard to do if you know the right points and the sort of pressure you need. If you can't manage by hand, there are thousands of gadgets out there that are cheap and will help you get it right in both intensity and spread. The more you can massage the better it will get - hence the point of learning to do it yourself. Twice a day and you're likely to see very quick improvement. When you do, keep at it and continue for at least a month after you think it is fixed (because it never quite is!).

Hospital physio told me to stop massaging .... but I do think it will help.
