Sittting

I am 8 weeks post op from Right THR. My hip is doing quite well and I am walking and swimming a few times a week. I have an issue with my opposite knee but I am hoping that will work it's way out.
My biggest issue is SITTING! My butt gets sore/tight/tired. When I am in a restaurant it is painful after abougt 30 minutes. At home I can get up and walk around. I am thinking of doing some travelling but can't imagine sitting in a car or on an airline anytime soon!!
Any thoughts??

Hi sue, I had my second hip ten days ago, as for sitting get one of those back cushions, higher at the back and front, usually navy with velvet cover and carry strap, available from most disability shops or on line, I got mine from local market cost £13 . I intend to take mine wherever I need to sit including friends homes, cinema etc. Good luck, they have a hole at the back of them.ann

hi sue,
I am sorry to hear this - what kind of a pain is it ? like sitting on rocks or golf balls ? it is part of the healing and a familiar feeling, to be honest - tendons, muscles etc have been brutally cut and your body is trying to heal it as fast as she can - it is also possible that scar tissue has formed underneath and that can be painful as well - try to massage gently around it ... I had 2 THR surgeries posterior approach - first one scar is a little more to the side so I don't sit on it - 2nd one however is more toward bum and more senstive -
the pillow advice is really good - take it with you - chairs in restaurants are low -
same for car -
before going on a flight, get clearance from surgeon first -- with car, stop frequeslty to get out and walk around a bit ..
the knee pain might be because of unbalanced walking ... how is your gait? are you walking aided or unaided?
have you had your follow up appointment yet?
you sound great to me .....
big warm hug

I see the surgeon next week for my. 2 month visit. I gave up the walker st 2 weeks and cane at 4 weeks as I was hoping it would help with my gate. I had used a cane six months prior to surgery to get around so I think the knee is getting used to my new walking gait!!

I agree that many different muscles were getting used before the surgery. And now when our gait tries to return to normal it hurts because the normal muscles haven't been used in a while. When I first went to the surgeon for an evaluation I told him that "this is a good day for me." Not too much pain.
?He told me to walk down the hall then turn around and walk back. I didn't realized that he was recording me as I walked. When he showed me the recording I couldn't believe how bad my gait looked to others. I truely looked handicapped. I guess that it will probably take time to reteach the normal muscles to work again.(is reteach a word)
?Stick with it and I'm sure you'll have your rear end muscles back in no time. Take care.

Sue,
It's a pain in the ....... well you know where
It's all about getting the muscles strengthened ... and it's not easy.
I am now 10 months post-op, and almost 8 months post revision, and I still get bad days when my backside hurts - like yesterday. I just did not move about the office enough, and paid the penalty.
I'm now commuting 2 hours each way to work in London, using train, tube and the hire bikes.
I hope to spend some time this weekend walking in the countryside to help build up my rear-end muscles.
