Six month post THR check today.

I just wanted to share my experience with everyone. You would think at six months everything would be great. It was up until 3 mo post op. I was almost pain free and walking one or two miles a few times a week.

Then I started doing some things I love, like yard work and more physically demanding activities, nothing high impact. I would suffer terrible pain in my leg and hip the next day and it would take me weeks to recover. I was very worried but the doctor told me this is common. My xrays looked good and that sometimes the muscles and tendon don't stretch like they should. He said they do encourage people to do their normal activities and have a normal life. He gave me a round of methylprednosolone (6 days) for inflammation. Me and this medication do not do well so I am not looking forward to taking it.

Anyway, I go back to the doctor in September, my one year anniversary. He said if I am still having problems they will do some test. He also said it's a good idea to keep a walking aid, crutches, walker, etc for setbacks and bad days when you just need to give the hip a rest. I didn't do that so now I will go look for crutches incase I have more bad days. Hope this gives someone some insight.

Take care

Thank you everyone that responded to me. I'm glad I could shed some light on recovery. Sometimes you just feel so good you want to get out there and get things done and have some fun! And sometiimes you will feel depressed when you have bad days. Just hang in there, the time goes by quickly! Before you know it, all you new hippies will be out there doing all your favorite things that you've been missing.

HI katheee,  I had my RTHR 8th Aug 2014 and all was going realy well until I lifted a 23 kg case!! Altho I had no choice but to lift it... I also just didn't think as I had never had issues with such a weight "in a previous life"!!   It has taken me from that date 17th Nov till now to get it sorted. Hip is fine but I had damaged the psoas muscles adn abductor and tendons!  Medicationdidn't have any effect so just had a cortisone jab and it is improving. BUT as one of the other correspondents stated... you now have to think twice .. if not three or more times before you do what  you used to!!  Trouble is ...  age is passing...already lost 2 yrs now into the 3rd.... am now approaching 62... I hope I am on the road to recovery and back to normal life and more important activities - I am/(was..hope not) an avid horse rider. My mare has had the last year off.. along with me!! Time for both of us to get back to "work".

gilEE, so glad to see a post from you! I am sad that you are still not on your mare. Agree on the think thrice before doing anything we used to do. Sometimes impulse just takes over me. So I give myself subliminal messages...remember the pain, remember the pain.....

Keep healing and I pray your mare will not have another year off!

gilEE, how were they able to tell what it was that you damaged and that it wasn't your hip? I was terribly afraid I might have damage my hip even though I didn't suffer any trauma, like a fall, but the doctor said my xrays looked good and that it's pretty hard to hurt the hip.

Hello Kathee, Because up until I lifted the case I had been improving amazingly and was expecting to start riding again... I could perform movements in the joint that I could not do before.  Plus movt like leg lifts/hamstring stretches etc suddenly were painful, so to me it was muscular and tendon issues and there was more swelling at top of thigh and pain down the quads and groin.   Eventually got to see consultant after a **** up by NHS on first appt.  and he agreed with me and that a cortisone injection shld "fix" me. BUT he sent me off for Xray just to make sure no damage to hip, that I had not twisted it.  But because of the movement I did have I was sure that had not happened.. Sure enough XRay was perfect.  Actually amazing to see....  Maybe cos of the horses I know how muscle and tendon damage in one area can affect other areas.  So injected into psoas but wish they had also injected into abductors also.  But maybe now they are not having to work so hard, quads and psoas now working correctly and swelling greatly reduced, abductors will gain strength.. fingers crossed!!smile

Hi Dawn,  Yes I am still here!!  Have posted on a few other discussion points.   Nearly one year off ..my mare is TOO flighty, not to mention slightly "wider" than she was when fit!!  But I hope to be starting again soon on a friends mare who is older, calmer and narrower!  I have been sitting on a Pilates ball to simulate beign astride but without that movement under you, it is difficult to simulate

Thank you gillEE, my symptons are pretty much the same as you described yours. Your experience as an equestrian really came in handy for you. They take xrays of my hip each time I go in for a follow up. I feel like I should be glowing in the dark by now. And I agree, seeing the xray of your new hip is pretty profound. Thanks again.

Hi Dawn, well y'day was first ime on horse since Mar 2014!  And it felt GREAT!!!  The strange thing was my non op leg muscles were tighter than op eg muscles  I guess cos all concentration on exercise has been on op side.. to the detriment of non op side!!  OK it was just a walk down the track and trot back up  BUT it was a tremendous confidence boost. I could even dismount normally, something I have been unable to do for 2 yrs! So now I can bring back in my flighty mare and start ground work again, get some weight off her and muscle built up and back to riding and getting us both fit once more...

Thank you for sharing Kathee.  I am almost 12 weeks post op and have been feeling great.  But yesterday i did some spring cleaning, and noticed how tired it made me.  Today i am taking it easy because i think i overdid it.  I will keep your words in mind the next time i push myself a little too much even though i feel great.  i think the first year is really the healing year.  Take care Ginny USA NJ

Yes, u and I r on the same time cycle...my op was sept. 26th.  Felt great when I boarded the plane to fla. ....after consciencously doing pt and all.  Fell in the parking lot and badly bruised two knees.  Don't know if this is related to the pain that I am getting in the thigh of the op leg.  Had X-rays and ultrasound and was told no breakage.....and the hip stood up to the impact.

Oh geez, my biggest fear! I am so glad you didn't break anything. I'm sure the jolt to your knees did effect the hip and it takes time to heal all over again.
