Sjogrens Syndrome and bad breath. Help!
Posted , 33 users are following.
I found out I had sjogrens last summer. One night, about two years ago a partner asked if I'd brushed my teeth. I told him, "Yes. Does my breath stink or something?" I had never had problems before and was surprised. It was one of many indicators (aside from swollen feet, feeling like needles were poking in my eyes and a tiredness, among other things). It was hell.
It still is.
Overnight, I went from having a fairly normal life to feeling like my face is plastic, drinking an ocean of water I can't feel on my tongue, dry nostrils, swollen feet, swollen eyes LOOKING older than I am. which had been a symptom my entire life, and the cherry on top? Bad breath, causing embarrassing moments at work, depression, and bouts of tears and social avoidances.
Ive tried every over-the-counter product you can name. All of the Biotene products, sugar free gum, Chlorophyll pills, Odorol pills, tea, alcohol-free mouthwash, Therabreath, I can go on forever.
Nothing is working.
Live gotten to the point where I even take a toothbrush and mouthwash to work. Doesn't work.
Im at my wit's end and find myself explaining sjogrens (which people just look at me like I'm crazy and are not receptive enough to research this illness to have empathy). I'm have SO many embarrassing moments, since that night and I have no idea what to do about it. It's disrupting my life as a teacher.
i avoid meeting s with faculty and other social events.
I have an interview coming up on the 22nd and I'm tempted to cancel it; because, I don't want my breath to turn people off.
This is is SO new for me. I call it a social experiment. Some people still treat me the same. Others avoid me, even grip their noses when they see me.
I would like ANY advice you have for this.
Ive seen a podiatrist, dentist, ENT, gastroenterologist, you name it and I'm at my wit's end.
I would appreciate your advice.
Thank you-

.Hello dear Oly! First of all i'm sorry to hear this is happening to you! This is very difficult chronic condition and you are not the only one here! Its very important to know that this autoimmune disease is linked to diabetes type one because usually they happens together because the cause of it its one! but its not a myth i mean some patients have diabetes type one only not with sjogren syndrom and others patients have both of them and others have only sjogern syndrom without diabetes! but the thing this immune system disorder attacks our glands and makes a dysfunction on them as well as in others parts of our body!. it attacks the pancreas the others glands that are charge of saliva in the mouth and tears in eyes. so this is the reason of the bad breath there is enough saliva to protect the mouth its always dry therefore there is chronic thrush and candida in the tongue and dead cells and bacteria. so thats why you need to clean your tongue twice day with tongue cleaning and after every meal you need to remove all the layers of the tongue and then use therapy breath mouth wash or any good mouthwash or gel to clean your toque with it because 80% of the bad breath from the tongue its self you can see that by ur self when u clean ur tongue with the tongue cleaner smell it and see it ur self! the other thing you need to do is to take diflucan its antifungal medication you can take one tablet high dose once a week or to take Flagyl (metronidazole) on and off becasue you cant keep taking it in the long run to not harm ur self. metronidazole its works like magic to kill all the bad breath that caused from fungal and bacteria in the tongue so if you can find it as mouthwash gel or something to use it on daily basis thats will be great if not then as i said you cant keep taking it as medication but you can take diflucan once a week pill the doctor can prescribe this to you and guide you how to take it. Hope this will work with you as it did work with me. let me know if you have any question!

Hi Oly! I realize this is a dated discussion, but I just read through the entire thing and wanted to know how you are? Did you find solution? Can you share the "new developments?" I would love to hear your thoughts/progress on this issue. Hope you are well.

Hi I'm replying late, but curious to know did you get your problem solved? I have a friend who uses Peridex mouthwash. You can ask your dentist for a mouthwash that has chlorhexidine gluconate in it as I was told it helps and also brush your tongue twice a day. Bacteria can do this I believe. Take care.

I'm so sorry you're going thru this. It sucks and I went thru it for years until I got dentures. You should ask your dentist if you have periodontal disease for one thing. It's a disease where plaque attacks your teeth and gums causing deep pockets in your gums where decay and bacteria thrive. Plaque smells very bad. That was the cause of my bad breath and eventually I got so tired of everything else that the disease caused I had my teeth removed and got dentures. The smell disappeared because the teeth did. It might be where your bad breath is coming from and it doesn't mean you would have to pull your teeth because your circumstances may be different. It's worth a check. Best of luck to you!

I just realized we've chatted before and gone over this some time ago. I apologize for my memory and my repeated words. Just so you know I've had my teeth pulled and have dentures now and the smell is gone thank heavens. I can only hope and pray you are doing better with this issue.
