Skiing 13 Months Post Op

Anyone Skied after THR? I may not be as aggressive on the bumps or do them at all but looking forward to getting back out there. Like driving a car, the real concern is the other guy. Thoughts?  Thanks Hippies

I just skied for 3 days and felt no added pain. I stayed off the mogels most of the time. I did not want to fall too often. I did remove my ski on the operated leg to get up once... I did not trust the 90 degree break position I was in. THAT RULE IS NOT IN PLACE FOREVER IS IT?

I am glad I did not press my luck on conditions that would increase my chances of falling - that seems to be the biggest risk of skiing with THR.

I have just come back from a skiing trip - in the end I decided not to ski this time, I could not face the prospect of any dramas with my both my children with me too, but I may consider it next year. Things to consider to my mind are:

Make absolutely sure you are insured overseas if you are going away. Some policies do not cover you if you have had a hip replacement, you need to pay for added protection.

What are the hospitals like where you are skiing? If you are going to another country be sure to check out the hospitals and the distance, are they good enough /clean enough to do with a hip revision? If the worst happens you need to be in good hands. I think this is important wherever you travel to, I had a fall on an island close to the mainland of Abu Dhabi and felt really quite terrified at the prospect of ending up in a strange hospital not knowing the language at all with the possibility of having a dislocation - the hospital was a few hours away by speedboat- it made me feel strangely vulnerable for the whole time I was there, despite the fall being okay in the end.

If you do have an accident, are there adequate well organised response teams on the ski runs?

Your first foray if you decide to go ahead, needs to be a on a super quiet peaceful morning with as few other skiiers as humanly possible and someone with you no? Take a phone, protection and take it easy.

My friend had a double hip replacement a few years ago and now does black runs every winter without thinking about it. We are all different in terms of risk.

I am actually much more terrified of ice than snow to be honest! Snow is soft and cushions the body, you fall on ice and you are in trouble!

I am of the mind that we have this surgery to reclaim our lives, to do everything we love to do, with the small cavat that we need to do these things with full awareness of the risk too. If you adore skiing, and it makes you feel alive why not try it out? If you are fairly indifferent to skiing, take up another hobby that does not risk your health smile
