Skin abscess/popped pimple?

i noticed some chest acne forming a couple days ago but didn't think much of it. Tonight there was a very red spot with a white head type thing on it (not painful at all). i accidentally scratched off the white head thingy when inspecting it. Now there's a big crater like thing. I've never had acne like this (painless and quickly forms a giant whitehead) Could it have been a painless abscess or boil? I put a band-aid and Neosporin on it, but am concerned about sepsis cause I've read that can happen with boils...
