Skin hyper-sensitivity

Posted , 6 users are following.

Over the past year I have become unbearably sensitive to soaps, moisturizers and basic self care products. I am at the point where I am moisturizing with olive oil and washing my clothes with vinegar. Is this a peri symptom? Are other women suffering with this? Is there something we can do? I am sick of living "off the grid" for the most basic parts of body care. Does the regular skin barrier come back after peri? Please!

I am evidentally just starting into Peri as of a year ago but. I have noticed I am much more sensitive, my skin is dryer and hair is thinning a little and alot more dry just the past few months. . May I give you a suggestions or other ideas. I bought Aveeno oatmeal bar soap to help my skin because it was much more sensitive this year. I also use Aveeno oatmeal lotion . If thathat doesn't work cetafil soap and lotion should not irritate skin. But it is much more expensive . I don't seem to have any reaction to it either of these. Also when my kids had skin allergies to detergents It was suggested I use( All free and clear) laundry detergent and told never to use dryer sheets. I personally drink plenty of water and I notice if i dont my skin is more irritated and dry. But now that I think about it making sure we get enough healthy oils in our diets might help or vitamins for hair ,skin and nails might help too. I think the hormones are what causes the dry skin and after our body's get used to the change in hormones and settle down our immune system settles and our skin doesn't freak out so much . I read something like that but not sure where. Anyway I have been trying to learn all I can and I do know it's important to moisturize during this time . I am pretty sure as your body gets used to the changes your skin will in turn settle down too because i think the immune system kinda goes into over ride . Gee I hope this helps you. My heart just goes out to all us ladies going through so many things from this . As the old saying goes this too shall pass .

      Hi Tam,

Thanks to you and Sabrina discussing the oils and vitamins, I took a good dose of Vit E this morning with breakfast. It might be the placebo effect, but 8 hours in and my skin feels less raging. (I was at the point where my clothes, however soft, felt like they were rubbing the top layer of my skin off.)

I've put in an order for the aveeno soap; I got some goat's milk soap with no sulfates/sulfites in the meantime.

You are absolutely right about the immune system being in over drive. I just became allergic to pears over the last few months. Pears!

Thanks to you, Sabrina and all the lovely ladies who are always so helpful! XXOO!!

I have no idea if it it peri related, but I am super sensitive to everything. I had to stop dyeing my hair because it would burn so bad. I hardly use makeup because it irritates my eyes. I can only use natural cleaning products because the smell of chemicals irritates me my nose/throat/lungs. I can only use free and clear detergent otherwise my skin is so itchy from the clothes. And, I switched to wool balls in place of fabric softener. I also steer clear of the sun and wear sunglasses 365 because my skin and eyes are sensitive.

      Hi Staci!

Thanks so much for letting me know I am not alone. The hyper sensitivity has caused so much extra work, money, and time! I have had your experience about detergent irritating the skin. The $3 detergent I would buy at the dollar store that kept my household running during my early career is now the villain in the laundry story!

I used to feel absolutely indestructable. Now I am brought low by dish soap or mascara. Ugh.

You're amazing for taking the time to write. Thanks!

I have Hashimoto's so I swapped out all the bad house cleaners, chemicals, no more hair dye, skin stuff etc for all natural stuff and recently I still had a very bad flare up of acne and rosacea. My Doc recommended vitamin a which I am taking and already have seen some improvement. Something to read up about if you think that could be a help to you. Good luck!

I am in perimenopause and I am going through the same thing!!! For me it's whenever hot water or heat touches my skin it turns totally red instantly and in the shower I come out with redness on me and rashes....also our skin gets thinner during this time and we tend to bruise easier as well....This is definitely a sign of perimenopause.

Thanks so much, Shana! I find myself thin skinned literally as well as metaphorically. I am sensitive to the hot water and almost all body products. And to most people around me as well!
