Skin Peeled Next To Incision Redness

Hi All,

I am a little concerned last week I got my splint off and moved into a boot. I still have my staples in from surgery but he gave me the ok to take a shower anyway after the shower a little bit of skin peeled next to one of my staples and in that area it is now very bright red and irritated.

I texted my Dr and sent him a picture he said it looks ok and was most likely due to my skin separating due to the staple in that area and he will take a look at it on my appointment on Tuesday but I cant help but be concerned that the area in infected.

It's not leaking any kind of fluid or anything like that and I am just letting it rest right now anyone have anything similar happen to them to put my nerves at ease?

    Hi DSF!

I know how you feel when it comes to worrying about changes associated with our injuries.

I broke my ankle 3 months ago. Recently I was going downstairs and landed on my foot causing a new pain. It ruined a few days for me because I was quite worried that I'd done some damage.  However, after seeing my physiotherapist, he put my mind at ease.

Hopefully you are feeling less anxious about things as the doctor saw the picture and said things look ok.

I am sure you will feel even better once you have gone to your appointment.

I hope everything works out for you and you heal quickly!

    Hi DSF,

I developed osteomyelitis two weeks after surgery to repair an open trimalleolar break. I was feeling really bad by middle of week two with extreme burning under the soft cast and had begun to have night sweats but I attributed it to the surgery, meds etc.

When the soft cast was removed end of week two, the PA called the surgeon almost immediately. There was redness and swelling around all of the stitches on one side of my ankle. There was also a pink discharge. Long story even longer- I was hospitalized for a week and had weeks of IV antibiotics. I’m sure this isn’t the norm and since the break was an open fracture it is my understanding that chances of developing this type of infection were much higher. I don’t want to scare you because these injuries are scary enough.

It’s great you can shower! I took bird baths for what seemed like forever.

I hope you continue to improve and there are no complications.

I’m at week 12 and I am so much better! Hang  in there. 😀
