I really empathise with you rhiannon.   I have the same problem even though I take sleeping pills.    Most occasions when I have this is because I want to always be my best when facing a good day or something not too good.  I have therefore concluded it is because you are afraid of not sleeping due to how bad you will feel  the next day after you have had a bad night.  The only way to cope is to not worry too much which only makes things worse.  Not easy but you can't force yourself to sleep you have to wait for it to come to you  Have you tried to meditate before going to bed.?    I do believe that hypnosis can also help.

    Best wishes Sapphire

Hi,  There are plenty of relaxation CD's  which if you use them you will be concentrating on a voice gently calming you and you will then be concentrating and putting all thoughts of sleep from your mind.   Am not sure about Nytol.  A lot think it is wonderful but did nothing for me - worth a try though. Good luck.  Sapphire

Honestly Sapphire, I have Exactly the same problem as you. I worry about not sleeping and how I will feel the next day................Went to bed last night, was still awake at 2-30am, though I seemed to dose of for a few minutes every now and again before that, just goes to show that I want to sleep but my mind won't let me,because I just worry about sleep all the time..................I have no answers, but thank goodness I am not alone, if you find a solution I would love to know. I go around most days feeling tired, I too take sleeping pills, but have been on them so long that I am used to them and they no longer work....................thanks for your experiences.I too am female by the way!!!!!

Hi and sorry not to reply to you before.  I totally relate to how you are feeling.  Our way of thinking is actually contradictive.  Like you I want to sleep but another half of my brain is saying "will I sleep - no I can't" We are therefore trying to catch something which should come naturally.  I can not be very helpful but at the moment I am trying something different.  I go to bed around 9 pm - don't take a pill and tell myself I will just lie there and not think about sleep.  I have managed to achieve that but hey ho at the time I would be taking my pills I wake up!!!!  So not off the pills but getting a little more sleep.  However, like you if I have to face an important day doing this is not so easy.  Now I am going to explore cognitive hypnotherapy which was suggested by a friend.  Problem is am not finding it easy to find a practitioner.   I will keep in touch and let you know.

Hi Sapphire, the mind is such a strange old thing. This last week or ten days I have been suffering from a dreadful cold, and have been going to bed a bit earlier, because I have felt so ill and been focusing more on this awful cold and cough, and not on whether I will sleep or not, I have been dropping off to sleep, no trouble at all. got to add that I am STILL taking a sleeping tablet, I reckon it's because I have not felt so anxious, and have not been focusing on the sleep issue or whether I will sleep or not. Just proved to myself really, that it's panic that stops me from sleeping having something else on my mind, has actually helped. Not that I would want this cold/flu for ever though.if you do try CBT do let me know how you get on!................Regards
