Sleep Apnoea and Driving Licence renewal

Posted ,

My husband hasn’t suffered from sleep apnoea for 13 years since he began using his CPAP machine (it even stopped his acid reflux) and was passed to drive by the DVLA at that time. This year he turns 70 so has had to renew his licence. He sent off the forms together with the SL1, stating he hadn’t had SA for over 7 years, hadn’t seen a consultant or GP about it since 2006 (when he was referred) but does attend the sleep clinic. Well, it shows you can’t take things for granted as the DVLA won’t accept his word and has written to his consultant.

He regularly attends the sleep clinic where he completes a questionnaire and they take a reading from the CPAP, which should prove constant use. We’re hoping that this will still be enough for him to be granted the licence and they haven’t come up with some other medical check he needs to do. It’s going to take a while for the overstretched medical team to respond in any case and he needs the car for his various activities including voluntary work which can’t be done by public transport.

Has anyone else been through this rigmarole?
