Sleep help

Hi. New to this forum so please be kind.

?I have been having problems with my sleep for it seems as long as I can remember now. I can fall asleep very easily at night but I wake up the next morning and dont feel like I have had a good sleep and have no energy and this continues through the day.

In the main I can manage to stay awake for however long the day may be but if an opportunity to have a sleep arises I will generally sleep for anywhere between a short nap or a full on sleep. Even if I have a full on sleep I will still be tired at night and still sleep.

?As i say this has gone on for a while and it has started to impact my mental well being. I seem to be getting a little depressed and anxious. Also my ability to focus has gone. This has affected my work performance and this has probably made the anxiety even worse.

?I had noticed over the last few years that I had woken up on a number of occasions unable to breathe in the night. I have had an overnight pulseoximeter test done and am awaiting the results. I have brought one of these devices and recorded a couple of nights sleep myself and they show my So2 levels stay above 90% all night and generally hover between 93%. So from this I assume that apnea is not a problem.

The pulse readings do move quite frequently during the night and from a low rate of low 60's go up to 80-90. This happens about 15-20 times during a 7 hour recording. I assume this is maybe just down to moving about during my sleep.

?So I am not sure as to what the cause of this can be. I know at the moment I am mildly depressed and anxious but this is only a relatively recent thing I am pretty sure.

?From reading I cannot see a similar condition. I have tried meditating in the past and that had no benefit. I am not big on taking pills / medication and generally avoid them like the plague but I am wondering if it is worth trying something that may make me sleep better and see if everything improves from there.

?Any help and advice would be greatly appreciated and hopefully somebody has experienced a similar set of issues and got through it ok

Thanks

    Hi David Welcome.

It sounds as though you maay have sleep pnoea. You  really need a sleep study doing. This can be arranged by a nuerologist specialising in sleep disorders.

Thank you Jane. I am waiting to hear back from the hospital with results from my overnight home pulseoximetry test. Hopefully I will hear something soon. I am thinking they may rule this out though because my levels dont fall below 90%. At least on the home tests I have done.

On the positive side I did have a poor nights sleep on the night i did the test though so it may well show something up.

Hopefully it will. Is it the same as a sleep apnoea test though?

I think they use this initial test to see if sleep apnea is possible then it is a more involved test. I will soon find out i guess. I have a feeling they will rule out apnea though which is probably a good thing in the long term but it doesnt get me any closer to finding why I am so tired all the time. Maybe it is something like stress etc although I have certainly been far more stressed in the past and suffered no side effects

Just an update. It seems my problem may have more to do with anxiety than I could ever of imagined.

My test for sleep apnea came back with no significant events. I still have the same problems and still feel wiped in the day but I have been trying some relaxation exercises and tried an over the counter sleeping pill last night.(nytol) With the aid of this pill I think I had a better nights sleep. I certainly don't remember waking which I normally do if I have. I didn't feel massively better but I woke with a clear head and felt like getting up so a definite improvement.

So hopefully things are on the up at last. I'm not sure what has caused this anxiety apart from maybe the sleep but if these exercises or pills work I am going to need to find out.

      Fingers crossed
