Sleep on Venlafaxine

Is it possible to sleep well again on Venlafaxine? I stopped taking Mirtazapine last week and I really struggle to sleep now. I don’t really want to keep taking Xanax all the time or antihistamines. Does anyone started sleeping well on this med without any sleep aids?

You may well be withdrawing from the mirtazapine especially if you stopped it cold turkey. Insombia is a common withdrawal symptom. You are lucky if that is all you have.

Hi Sarah, I reduced form 15mg and took it every other day and then stopped. I can't sleep now 😦 I came off it because I felt more tired the next day. Does it take long for the body to reset and sleep again? i was on MIRT for 4 months.

I think it is likely mirt withdrawals more than the ven. It could take some months to level out.

I going to ask you about that Karen? I got the tablets of Amazon. Do you take them before bed? How long did your insomnia last when you quit Mirt?

As soon as I stopped mitrazapine I had difficulty sleeping not going too lie it was awful I would just lie there awake I had no tired feelings at all. No rubbing of the eyes no yawning nothing but I was exhausted. The doc gave me sleeping tablets for a few weeks because I was desperate I only took them every third night because I didn't want too rely on sleeping tablets too sleep I wanted my sleep too return natuarally . I've been taking magnasium glycinate because in this page someone recommend it and I defo think they have helped. I got them from Amazon they weren't

I will try to take Xanax or antihistamines every orher day and will see whether my sleep returns. I will also try magnesium. Is your sleep fine now? I hope once my depression improves, sleep will also improve. x

hello, although the mirt didnt work well for you on its own, it provided sedation for sleep. when ven is fully working for you, your sleep should become much better, normal even. until then you need to use the xanax. your pysc could have left you on the mirt, as mirt snd ven work well together.

the idea is that when ven is fully working, you can start to come off the xanax, as it will be easier to do so.

Thanks Nigel, I wanted to reply to you but can't find my inbox now when with the changes... and I am using my phone. I have started week 5 on 225 and week 10 in total on Ven. My mood is still depressed but I cope with the day and anxiety is gone. My doc took Mirt away because I was always so tired and had no energy. She added a small dose of Sertraline to Ven. Sleep will be tough at the moment but will be taking Xanax or antihistamines. Do you still take your stuff before bed or you don't need it now when you are better? x

hello, given where youve come from, its still early days for you. i felt no improvement until week 10. most people with depression or anxiety seem to be well on the way to recovery by this stage. however, most peoples conditions are not as bad to begin with. This majority respond well to the different ssris, which are the first line on anti depressants recommend. people that fail to respond to 2 or 3 of the ssris, are then tried on second line of anti depressants, ven and mirtazapan. i think as a result, people starting on ven or mirt have more serious conditions, as they have been depressed or anxious for much longer. not only that, theyve probably been made worse by the previous failed attempts, i know i was, and they are less responsive to anti depressants. to me, this would explain peoples worse experiences when starting ven, and why recovery on ven takes so much longer. peoples resiliance and patience have been used up, by the time they started. ive been trying to work out why recoveries on ven seem more difficult, and why it takes so much longer. this is what i think, and hope it gives some help with what they are going through.
Sorry alan, this isnt aimed at yourself, its my thoughts on why being on ven is so hard.
im not tecovered yet, and i still take 2.5mg morning and night. following a recent dose increase, my anxiety is well up, stopped getting worse, but i couldnt do without the diazepam yet. the idea is that once the higher dose is working, i should be able to drop the diazepam. its currently half of what i took at the start. i would have thought the increased dose of ven alone, would have soon helped with your tiredness and mood. you must be close to this happening. dropping mirt will have given you withdrawal, and starting sert additional side effects, without the sedation of mirt. in the short term, you may feel worse, but the reason for recommending this change, will be that you benefit more in the long term. sert isnt sedative. once anti depressants are working correctly, your mood improves, anxiety comes down, and when it does, your sleep will improve. in turn, improved sleep improves mood, which lowers anxiety, which improves sleep and it carries on until you recover.
bit of a long response, hope it gives people some reassurance.

Thank you Nigel... You always give me more strength... You are so right about patience and everything being used up! This is how I feel. I have had a really bad day today because I can't see the light at the end of a tunnel yet but I hope Ven will start working soon and then Sert will help too. I am tired because of my poor sleep and headache but I hope once Mirt is completely out and Sert is settled I will be improving and enjoying my family and life again. x
