Sleep restriction inquiry

For the past couple months I've been using self-administered sleep restriction regimen in an effort to get back to a normal sleeping schedule. I used to only be able to sleep 3-4 hours a night, if that, and would often wake up in the middle of the night even when I made a point of going to bed later. This has been going on for about 2 years now.

For the most part it seems like this sleep restriction is going ok. However, there are some nights where I still wake up after maybe 3 hours of sleep (I'm up to almost 5 now).

Are you supposed to continue with the protocol as normal, ignoring nights like these? Or is there something different I'm supposed to be doing in response?

They've been happening at least once a week, unfortunately. The past three nights I've gotten about 3 hours the first two and 4 last night. ~5 isn't much better, but it's an improvement.

Any insight you guys have would be great.

I too did sleep restriction but followed a book called Overcoming Insomnia by Colin  Espie. One thing he pointed out in the book is that even good sleepers have nights where they can’t sleep so I would continue with what you’re doing and put those nights down to just being one of those nights. I average about 6.5 hours sleep now after suffering for years so stick with it, you’ll get there.
