Hi Ruthann, I'm just behind you at 5 weeks for my right THR  (13 weeks for my left) I'm still sleeping on my back, have tried sleeping on my side (double hip so both scarred) but little success getting comfortable. I think what we are experiencing is normal after THR, i was hopeful that by this time I wouldn't be feeling discomfort at night but sadly it goes on which for me means little sleep.  Pain at night was one of the big factors for me having the surgery so disappointed. There is something called Melatonin (I think) that can be prescribed for sleeplessness. I am going to ask my GP about it when I go next.  I feel like I haven't slept properly for t least a year and wonder if I have just forgotten how!

    Hi Ruth Ann

    Greetings from UK.

Sleeping is so important and sorry u having probs. My hospital was much more relaxed about my sleeping on my unoperated side than many others report here, cos I just can't do sleeping on my back, and said simply just into position care fully..so I'm blessed with usual seeing paternity from day one....With a couple of visits to the loo but 7.5 hours sleep.

How about a large stuffed toy between you and the age of the bed?!

I also sleep on my side and since I have been doing that I have no sleep problems, but I did put a pillow between my legs at first and then a cushion.  If you are afraid of falling out of bed, then put a pillow on the floor beside the bed.

I couldn't put a large stuffed toy by the bed in case our dog came in during the night as she would have fun running off with it!

Hi Ruthann I think it could be due to not being as active.

I have also slept well most nights since sleeping on my sides, front alternately but occasionally I can't get to sleep.

I read a chapter of my book every night to help me get to sleep and if I've laid there for an hour and can't get to sleep, I just read another chapter and then I usually go to sleep.

It could help to take your mind off falling out of bed.

Another thought is can you sleep in the middle of the bed?

Hi ruthann, 8 weeks post op THR and i can only sleep 3 hours then i wake then need to walk to bathroom and stretch a bit.  Legs feel a bit "spasmey" and the need to really be stretched out is always there when trying to go back to sleep.  I am cleared to sleep however i want to, but still 3 hours at a time.  I agree wih someon else who wrote that its possiblely due to inactivity along with some achiness.  Heres to a good nights' sleep!!!  Ginny USA NJ

I did not have problem with sleep as I can sleep any where any time prior to my op.

for how long you can sleep depends on the individual .

My advise is to sleep when you can and gradually your pattern returns.

If pain/discomfort ( you may not realise this is causing it as you are so used to pain) is waking you up it will gradually get better- try to keep up with lots of exercise during the day to tire yourself out. It is still relatively early and healing is still happening

However it might depend on your age- evidently as you get older you sometimes lose the ability to sleep and there is nothing you can do about it!
