Sleeping after hip replacement

Posted , 114 users are following.

I'm 44 years old and had a hip replacement 10 days ago, I'm having real difficulty sleeping on my back . My recovery has been good , my wound is healing well ,I'm walking on 1 crutch now and doing exercises regularly. I'm just so tired from not sleeping at night and find that in napping in the day . Any ideas on sleeping .

Hi haha don't mind. I can sleep on my side!

I'm still sleeping on back short periods, although physio did explain how you an sleep on your unoperated side by using pillows, but wary it maybe too soon , so may try in another week or so. Sticking to watching trash on iPad by night in between 2-3 hours sleep, pillow under knee does help with pressure.

It was 10 weeks when I could finally lie all night on my new hip rachel, but strangely enough I still feel a bit of discomfort when I lie on my good side, like a pressure on my new hip, so I tend not to. Nights are so long when you don't sleep.

Advice confusing, many people on this forum seem to have been told to sleep on unoperated side but I was told to sleep on operated side with pillow between knees. Also told not to put cushions under knees when sleeping on back. However after about 4 weeks woke up all over the place, what can you do?

I was told the exact same thing Susan. I’m 44 and had a thr just over two weeks ago. I’m  struggling with the back pain and I’m cutting down my morphine from 50 ml per day to 5ml in 24 hours which has put me in mild withdrawal, this seems to be keeping me awake too. I’m sure it will all be worth it in the end x

    HI everyone

I'm 3 weeks post ceramic hip replacement. Like most others I struggle with intermittent sleep.

My question is low long did you find the discomfort and swelling around the scar to take?

I had my surgery on the 10th of jan, and unfortunately had complications of a nerve getting nicked causing my foot to be asleep and giving me dropped foot, I have to sleep with both a foot brace and a leg brace to keep my leg straight. Put these with trying to speep on my back, deal with the fire and ice raging in my foot that is still swollen twice the size of my other foot, sleep at night is non existant. And naps in the day after the leg brace is gone isn't enough to make me feel like I have relaxed at all. I got new pain meds yesterday, and I said the hell with the leg brace, found I got at least 2 hours of comfort since my surgery. Wish you luck in a speedy recovery smile

    Hi

gary..I have my staples out tomorrow but from what I can see my Scar doesnt seem swollen....very bruised though...have you tried Bio oil or Rescue Oil which is the cheaper version..very soothing and should help to repair the scar tissue....

Hi I am on day 17 after hip replacement. I went to the Red Cross and hired a metal back rest for my bed

Which lets me sleep propped up. It is brilliant! I tried propped up with pillows but I'd didn't work. Good luck!

I will be 5 weeks in to my op and feel great,I can walk indoors without. Crutches and take just one out now.

Sleeping was difficult but gets better and having cushion under leg was good at first.I have had 2 physio apps already and another tomorrow then on 26 th just over 6 weeks see consultant.

I didn't have any stitches, wound was glued and stitched with dissolve able stitches inside and steristrips, now wound is healed but use bio oil every day and I think is getting softer,

The edge do wound is very hard and physio told me to massage it.

All in all after first couple of weeks it has been amazing, after 3 weeks went to the theatre and had a weekend away in a hotel, where I walked for ages, only took toilet seat and crutches.

I feel very lucky that my op has gone so well as only 62.

Hydrotherapy was great this morning...good to feel almost normal....actually walked with both legs without support in the water....very tiring though.....same again next week.

Really helps to keep walking around and doing the exercises though!

Not sure I'll be doing anything like zumba but hope to be swimming ...we booked a week in Cornwall next month in a lodge with indoor pool and sauna so should be mobile by then!!
