Unfortunately for me only medication worked. My adrenaline was running so high all the time I would wake up in a panic every night. I was on Xanax, very low dose, while my psychiatrist and I found a better long term medication. If you're looking for alternative ways to calm yourself, breathing exercises, if done properly can be effective for some. I did found its more effective if they're done before the attack rather than in the midst of one, but again, not always enough. Chamomile tea is known to have a calming effect and so does melotonin. You can also try physical exercise.

I would see a physician before taking any supplements but probably a good idea to see him/her regardless. Not getting enough sleep worsens anxieties.

One of my main suggestions is to get a diagnosis of this shortness of breath problem at the ER or your family doctor. They will perform breathing and oxygen level tests on you to check if there's any signs of asthma and also perform xray to check your lungs condition. If everything comes out normal its most likely anxiety. But 1 thing that does help a whole lot is an inhaler. 2 puffs a night and you will sleep good.
