Sleeping on back or stomach

I had ankle surgery 3 weeks ago on 2 peroneal tendons and on the ATF ligament.
Should I sleep on my back or on my stomach? If on my back, why? I love to sleep on my stomach since a long time, so if I have to sleep on my back, I need to stuck a pillow on each side of my body so I don't turn around involuntarily on my stomach while sleeping.

I think the main thing is keeping the ankle elevated if there is swelling.
If there is no swelling then it shouldn't matter how you sleep.
If you have swelling, and you really can't sleep on your back, you could try and put a pillow under your knee to foot so it is raised up.
I am side and stomach sleeper so I just put a large amount of pillows in a pile and put my leg over to the side onto the pile so it was raised up - this was after the first two weeks after ORIF surgery for a fracture. I didn't sleep much the first two weeks while I was attempting to sleep on my back.

That's a good idea, I'm going to try it, thank you.

Good day Jacques,
I too am a stomach sleeper. I've had to be on my back on couch for last 3 months. I now can turn on my side bit only left side. I have had heartburn every day 2x a day since the tibia break and feel its from sleeping on my back. I read if u lie on left side it drains the acids back down thru the digestive tract.
You may want to buy a body pillow that might help comfort you on your side or cushion your body.
Good luck to you and hope you get better with each day. 😊
