Sleeping on my side.

Posted , 12 users are following.

i have had my post op check up and all okay.

I was told I need a pillow between my legs when I sleep on my non operated side.

I was wondering how long will I have to do this or is it always?

I still use one because it is more comfortable that way. I guess I just got used to using it. My operation was last June.

I was told that it was until my restrictions were removed (6 weeks I think).

My physio said no to sleeping on my side until after 6 weeks when restrictions are removed. They didnt mention anything about needing a pillow....

    Hi Lynn,

congratulations darling --- You probably feel relieved ...

so many different responses about the pillow between knees thing - I prefer to sleep with body length pillow as it seems to relieve back pain - and sticky thighs (too much info ???) -

You will need it in the beginning for sure to prevent leg from flipping over beyond  90 degres - you will feel this pulling sensation (at least I did) -

I'd go for as long as it feels good ...

     big warm hug

I was told that after a few weeks that I would start waking without the pillow still in place. Then was the time it was no longer needed.

It's to stop your leg crossing the mid-line point and to prevent dislocation (see my website for dislocation risk graph), so usually about the first 12 weeks, however like so many things about this roller-coaster journey, we all seem to get totally different advice.

No its not always l just done it for a few weeks but l.keot waking up and it had fell out so l eventually did not bother. As long as you are not waking up in pain. I think a couple of weeks to a month. I have now had my 2 hips replaced and l am 9 weeks from my last op and l can sleep on any side now without any pillows. In saying that my sleep has not been grest since l got my ops l can only sleep in my bed up to about 4am 6am on a good night then l have to get up take painkillers and sleep the rest of night on couch which l find so comfortable. So since nov l have never woke up with my husband in the morning which is very hard.

Not for always but I did it for quite a few months post my first two ops and am still doing it at nine weeks this time - I just find it more comfortable - as everything settles down I just gradually forgot it or woke up to find I'd kicked it out of bed ! Xx
