Sleeping on non-operated side THR

Posted , 11 users are following.

Hi,

When can you officially sleep on your non operated side after a THR. I can manage an hour or 2 on my operated side, with a pillow between my legs. But, I desperately want to lie on my non operated side.... I'm 11 weeks post op ? Can you sleep normally after 12 weeks??

Also at 12 week stage can you get rid of the hospital high chair and the toilet seats ??

due to COVID19 I have no one to ask !

Hi Philip, theres no rules to say lay on your back or non operated side, you say your 11 weeks in now, dont see why you shouldn't be able to sleep ok on your unoperated side but keep pillow between legs if need be, as for your toilet raiser only you know if you can stand up without this aid and high chair, golden rule is take everyday at a time and don't push yourself too hard, I've had both hips replaced and I still don't do anything which may result putting me in pain, you have just got to think ahead of what your doing.

    hope this helps

i am following as I am interested in other peoples response

I had TRHR march 2018 2 years already

i still cant sleep on operated side for more then 20 mins, and non operated side I can last about 90mins both sides only with pillow between legs

I toss and turn all night, it is 100% better then the pain before surgery i am not complaining just interested in others response

For the high chair and raised toliet i was about 10-12 weeks but my physio therapist told me ehen i could remove

I believe it does depend on your recovery, as dislocation is still a possibility for up to first year

hope your sleep is peaceful soon

      Hi Irishsuzyq,

I had my op April 2018, I was given 12 weeks of precauctions. Horrible sleeping on back like everyone but I did it for about 10 weeks. I tested sleeping on operated side from about 6 weeks, it was okay but still went on my back, did not want to chance it, could sleep on non operated side from about 8 weeks.

I never had any pain after my op, went back to pilates at 5.5 months and step aerobics, then joined the zumba class.

I have been having more aches in my operated hip in the last couple of months, it is not perfect by a long way and I know it is false, it will never feel normal but, I am not in pain and my feet are level.

    Hi

I'm only two weeks post op and physio told me today because I had no precautions to follow I can sleep on my side after two weeks but I'm very nervous. I'm going to try on my operated side tonight with a pillow as struggling with sleeping on my back. Did anyone have any problems when you first started on your side? She said it should be OK either side with pillow.

Also did anyone get a click in your hip at random? No pain just the random click/pop.

    Hi

you should be able to sleep on either side . I'm 6 weeks post hip op and allowed to sleep on each side and yes get rid of frames 🙂

at 9wks post op I was told can sleep on either side.

I do try during the night, but cannot sleep long on either side and end up back on my back which is frustrating.

everyone is different, I was told to try doing new things from 9wks onwards but of hurts stop!
