My Physio said 2
I waited 6 weeks when hip 1 was replaced in March and 2 weeks when hip 2 entnin August
but I slept on the operated side
Hope this helps.
Saying that I would follow your surgeons instructions to be safe
as you can dislocate your hip

I only slept on my back until my 4 week checkup. Surgeon said I could go ahead and sleep on my side. I had a Posterior RTHR. Sleeping on my right side, I kinda feel like I'm sleeping on Springs. He said if I choose to sleep on the non-operated side to make sure I put a pillow between my legs to make sure the operative side doesn't end up crossing over in front of me. My hip doesn't keep me up at night, but my arms sure do!! Who knew using crutches was such a chore for your arms!

Hi Auntie Beanie,
I haven't got a date yet for my THR but I have just posted a question about problems sleeping on my back last night. I too have lower back problems and just as soon as I got my hip comfortable my lower back started to pain like labour pains...I took sleeping suff as I was desperate for sleep but dreading tonight. Lower back problems will always be there but sleeping on my side is no longer an option. Any advice on how you eventually did it please?

I found the best to be a couch cushion, normal pillow was just too big, I found a really fully stuffed cushion I put two inserts in the cushion cover and then put the whole thing into a couple of pillow cases, the ends of the pillow cases give you something to get a grip on for adjustment, without breaking the 90 degree rule.
I woke up on my side in the hospital 6 hours after my surgery, nurses were not particularly happy about it, and said you got there, you get undone, oucccchhhh, but I did it, very carefully back onto my back as per requirements.

Hi Monkeypearl
6 weeks unless advised differently by your surgeon.
I am now 4 weeks post op - saw my surgeon on Wednesday and he advised that I can sleep on my operated side if I wanted. I am trying to but it's not that comfortable yet,so I'm swapping between lying on my back and on my side - unfortunately, it still means that my back aches every morning!
