I know what you are experiencing and I 'suffer' in a similar way, as I think many of us do on here.

?The first thing to try and do is to not to worry about it! Easier said than done I know. But worrying will only make it worse. So convince yourself that if you stop worrying then things will get better.

?Then take the 'pressure' of trying to sleep, or going to bed at set times and expecting to fall asleep. It maybe in the past that was what did happen, I know in my case for years I would so easily fall asleep and get a reasonable night, that when it suddenly stopped it was a great shock.

?So occupy yourself in the later evening as you do in the early part. Reading, watching TV or whatever. Then only go to bed when you feel really tired.

?But that still may not mean you get a good night. You need to take away any expectation of sleep, even when you are very tired! By distracting your mind so that you are not waiting for your eyes to close and to drift off. I listen to audio plays, comedy shows etc. Choose something you like and want to hear the whole thing!

?So that you are so involved in what you are listening to, your not worrying if you are moving towards sleep. Even have the mindset that you will be dissapointed if don't get to hear the whole thing! You should find that your body then makes you go to sleep.

It might be the case there is medical cause for you staying wake or waking during the night. But try these suggestions first and see if they help.

I always get anxious about going to bed but as i don't have to get up early for going to work ( not able to work due to poor health ) then i watch dvds until i feel sleepy then settle in bed listening to Audio Books - i have been doing this far as long as i can remember - mid 80's , have a very large collection ( couple plus thousands ) , i only listen to ones at bedtime that i can get into easily , don't go over my head , like a good crime drama , it has to be someone reading who does the voices as well of each character , i have it at a volume that only i can hear so it soothes me off to sleep , i do have tablets that are supposed to aid sleep but if my mind is distressed due to my mental health then they don't always work , have you spoken to your doctor about the problems you have been having ? please take care x
