Sleeping with audio

I have reached a point where I need to address an issue I have with getting to sleep.
For as long as I can remember I have listened to audio books, radio shows and podcasts (all people talking, not music) to get to sleep.
It has become such a routine that I press play close my eyes and (most of the time) fall asleep within 15mins. If I wake up in the middle of the night I just need to play something to fall back asleep. When I am on my own I listen to it out load, however most of the time I fall asleep with headphones in.
I really need to change this habbit as I have become dependent on it. I have tried a couple of times to fall asleep without listening to anything and I cant sleep. I end up giving up and listening to something to get some sleep.
Can anyone offer any advice:
- How can I get out out of this habit?
- What I have done to my brain to make it need to listen to audio to sleep?
Any advice will be appreciated as I need to change

Why do you want to get out of your habit in the first place?
When your habit works wonders, cool man, keep having great sleep.

I am in a similar place to you.
I also felt that the audio (also spoken word not music) helped me fall asleep.
I still use it though I haven't thought that I am dependant on it for sleep, tho' I maybe.
I have on occasions not bothered to turn it on and still have fallen asleep. But also have had other times when I did then turn it on again.
Do you have it playing all the time? So it is going whilst you sleep until you turn it off? I use a tablet and have a 'sleep' app which I can set upto 1 hour duration. It turns off any sound app which is playing at the duration set. Probably also helpfully it lowers the volume gradually rather than just shutting it off.
I think I would certainly miss the facility if it broke or I couldn't have it for some reason.

I'm with the others in here John. Why on earth are you concerned about this habit? It's so much better than taking medication to get to sleep. Now that would be something you really needed to worry about!
If you want to wean yourself off it, why not try an occasional night without it, preferably on a night when you're not expecting too demanding a day? The worst that can happen is you wouldn't sleep much that night but the occasional sleepless night won't do you any harm at all.
