I've been diagnosed with a sliding hiatus hernia, been to my GP and ask him to refer me for surgery but he's hesitant about referring me, so need some advice on what else I can do, anybody else had this problem

Maybe you could just ask him to refer you to a gastroenterologist and talk to that doctor.
I feel for anyone going through this. I've been on meds for it for years and now they don't seem to work.
Best of luck.

Just wanted to ask if you really need surgery; I say this as I put up on the Internet the following: -
'Can a sliding hiatus hernia be repaired with medication' - It referred me to an an artical by Dr. Rind entitled;
A Simple Trick for Natural Treatment of Hiatal Hernias
Basically you drink three glasses of lukewarm water then bend over then up quickly several times and the food blockage will go and the pain will stop!
I read this as I also have a Hiatus Hernia but didn't know I had one till it showed up on X-ray! I suppose I am lucky as ! don't get any side effects.
Hope this helps but read the article.
Kind regards

However, I would still suggest the 3 glasses of lukewarm water as recommended by Dr. Rind - I hope you read the article I referred you to.

I went to Seattle yesterday to see Dr Aye to see if I was a candidate for surgery, I am older and have some other health issues but pretty active, he said I was but wanted to do a couple of test, I have suffered with this for years and this h h is 8.1 in size, I also had trouble in the past getting a referral.
Recently I went to my doctor and told her I was having breathing problems, felt caused by the hernia and wanted a referral, she did a few test to make sure it wasn't my lungs, then referred me to Dr Aye and he has done many of these. Many doctors are against this surgery and may not even know other doctors that specializes in this type of surgery, I suggest doing research in your area and find a doctor that has done many of these surgeries, then go to your gp and tell him you just can't handle the problems you are having with the hiatal hernia any longer and ask him to refer you to the doctor of your choice, maybe even ask if he knows the doctor you are choosing, also if he knows someone better. Best to you

I am aged 72 in April and on Lansoprazole 15mg daily; I really feel a cad taking them as I have no symptoms whatsoever - it's just that the sliding hiatus hernia showed up on an x-ray. I go back to Papworth later this month and I am going to ask them to check again as I really don't get any symptoms. It seems pointless taking medication if I don't have any problems!

esophageal hiatus hernia need to be operated on if they are symptomatic but sliding hiatus hernias are often not dealt with through surgery unless all else has failed. I had surgery for esophageal hiatus hernia over a year ago. I have better health now but still suffer from digestive problems. I would suggest you get a second opinion if you have been on Medd for awhile and if they aren't working.

Fortunately, I have no symptoms, just that it showed up on a chest x-ray? so I just take the Lansoprazole 15mg daily and get on with my life. My main problem is I have an IPF.
