I get chest pain under my ribs. I have hiatal hernia and GERD. The doctor said it was gastro related. My GP did a EKG to check my heart. I thought I was having a heart attack. You could be experiencing a similar thing. I'm not sure you would see the hernia externally?

Watch what you eat. Don't drink soda or anything fizzy. Try to do a low acidic diet and eat small amounts often.

It is a difficult thing to deal with and I empathize with all sufferers. I hope you get some relief soon and good luck with the barium swallow.

    Hello Julian

After the test they will probably want to do an endoscopy. The burning

can be caused from the hiatal hernia, I would not give up until I got some answers, also if you end up having surgery, so important to have a

surgeon that has done many of them, Dr Aye in Seattle has done many.

For years I was told don't have that surgery and suffered much until just

recently and my doctor referred me to the surgeon after doing several

Test checking my breathing and found that the severe breathing problem I have been happining for over a year is not caused from my lungs, I asked could this be caused from Haiti hernia and she said yes. The serge on said surgery should definitely help the breathing. I also have trouble with many foods and burning in between my shoulders and I take medication for gerd. Hope this helps. I hope the best in your search.

Your red lump is unlikely to have any connection to the hernia . HH , unlike "regular" hernias , have no external visible signs . Chest pain is a common symptom of HH sadly .

I assume you're being considered for surgery if you've been referred to a specialist ? If so a barium swallow / meal will show any swallowing problems but may miss a sliding HH . After that you will have a manometry test and a 24hr ph study before any discussions about surgery  .
