Hi i am due to have my op on the 5th july and have just had my gel polish taken off my toes in preparation for the op. i have just discovered that on my big toe there is a very small fungal infection. i am wondering now whether they will do the op as i read somewhere that they wont operate if there is an infection?
anyone know anything about this?
thanks

Hi. I was all prepped and scrubbed waiting to into the theatre, specialist came in to say hello and tell me what was happening. He pulled the sheet down to look at my thigh and noticed my knee was swollen. Bye Bye operation. Cancelled.!!! I had fallen over four days earlier. Have since had my op four months ago and just getting mobile.

They are normally worried about fungal infections as it could affect other parts of the body and they are infectious. You really need to check as it could be a no no for an op, on the other hand they may say it is OK.

I had an infection on a big toenail - didn't cause any problem to them.
Good luck!

Hi there
Go to your local chemist asap and get a treatment like curanail and put it on to stop it spreading to your other toes.
It shouldn't stop you having your hip op done.
My Mum (81) has had it for years, and we've battled with it to keep it at bay with regular podiatrist appointments, and treatments. She's got 4 fungal toes because it spread as I didn't realise she had it until her initial check as to whether she was good for the op.
Yes, some surgeons do say they'd rather you didn't have a fungal nail infection because it suggests that your immune system is compromised and obviously they'd rather you were in optimum health for your op.
Mum's had her hip op today. Her surgeon said as long as her nails were cut and filed down to minimum and the nail fungus contained within just a few nails, it was fine to operate providing all other checks proved that she was otherwise healthy.
She passed all other checks - weight, blood pressure, cardio, MRSA, other bacteria including urine infection etc - so was good to go.
As so many people as they age have fungal nail infections and as of yet - unless you catch it early - there are few cures - they seem to be a bit more lenient in the UK about this.
I've got the same problem but mine is most of my nails. If you've got just one nail - stop it spreading asap! And, there are tablets you can take for 6 months which your GP can prescribe - and the tablets really are the solution if you've only just got it.
Wish I'd taken the tablets years ago when suggested. I didn't. I thought that topical treatments would be ok but they don't work.
You might want to get your hip op done and talk to them about the option of tablets after your hip op.
If you've got a date - just tell them - but you'll be fine.
Good luck xx

Hi Heather,
My surgeon was very particular, I was told he would not operate with any infection, burns etc, I had a bit of eczema, the pre op nurse told me to get to the doctor and get it under control. The night before op I was cooking some quiche's to freeze and yes I burnt my finger (panic), I always use vinegar for burns and bites, etc., luckily it worked as normal and the burn disappeared by morning.

Jen you are right, hospitals are paranoid about infection as it can be devastating.
