Slow healing hip fracture

Posted on here a few months ago just after fracturing my hip and having pulmonary embolism. Hip was repaired with nail and pins, but after 3months I am still unable to walk without using one crutch and still getting burning searing pains in my hip and leg. Worried that it is as good as it will get and will be disabled for the rest of my life. Dr keeps telling me that he can't understand the pain and probably nerve pain but cant give me any answers on what to do about it. I have put on a lot of weight as cant exersise like I used to and am getting very depressed. I am 57yrs old so was hoping to have a few more good years yet! Has anyone on here recovered from broken hip and how long did it take? Haven't started any medication for my osteoporosis yet as waiting to see specialist next week as Dr thinks my osteoporosis is secondary possible lupus. Very wary of taking prolia as reading all the side effects worries me. Having enough problems with the drug thinners that I have to take. I cant even put socks and shoes on my broken hip side on my own. Am I right in thinking that I should be almost back to normal after 3 months? To make matters worse I dropped a large casserole dish on my big toe and broke it on the same side. I am becoming paranoid of slipping and falling breaking something else. Trying to exercise and strenghten my hip but pain is still excruciating physio doesnt seem to be helping. Any advice or experiences would be appreciated.

They must have thought your bones were in good enough shape to be worth repairing. An acquaintance of mine, much older, broke her hip and was given a hip replacement. She had osteoarthritis and was already on a list, but thought she'd have a two year wait, so for her it was a lucky break. How is your nutrition? Are you eating a good well balanced diet, including some fermented foods?

I think it will probably take a lot longer with someone with osteoporosis to recover from something like this as the bones aren't as strong. From a pain perspective I take gabapentin and also east oily fish every other day, turmeric daily, collegen, berries, vitamin C, vitamin D and magnesium. Epsom salt baths are really good too and my tens machine which I use on my bad hip. Hope that helps

Hi Dianna. I was writing a long reply, when my phone went flat and I lost my lengthy reply. Just to say, hold in there, 3 months isn't long for an osteoporotic fracture. I'm 61 and too have osteoporosis. Two years ago I shattered my ankle . I couldn't walk unaided until post op 5 MONTHS. I don't limp now but still have complications at times. I lost my livelihood and my ankle will never be the same. I was in a lot of pain for months. I still get pain but I think my ankle is still improving, so hang in there. Osteoporotic fractures are not like your normal bone breaks. Try to take calcium, Vit D , Vit K and magnesium. I take Prolia because I can't risk another break. Every medication can have bad side effects. I know some are against it , yet they take other poisons. Just do what you think is right for you. I was on antidepressants and I came off those, as the nausea, dizzy spells, buzzing in ears was too much for me to handle. So do what's right for you. I too still have a fear of falling. I am so cautious when walking, which causes me much anxiety. At times. Something like walking I took for granted, can be a nightmare at times. I do hope you improve soon Dianna. I hear you. I hope I have given you some comfort and future hope.

Yes, I should have mentioned vitamin therapy. It's vitamin k2 you want, as you'll get k1 from your food.

Hi Diana,
When I listen to you I actually have the feeling it's me asking the question but it's related to my spine?
I have the same issue and nb really understands why it hurts me so bad.
I even start to wonder is there a chance a bone never heals?
This scares me to death.
Greetings dear

Dear Diana,
I had a bad wrist fracture (technical name of, comminuted, intra articular fracture) basically shattered right in the joint, and had to be wired, pinned and plated, 2 years ago, which eventually led to a diagnosis of osteoporosis. It left me with a weird thing called complex regional pain syndrome, which wasn't picked up until 3 months after the fracture. This lasted a year, I had to attend pain management clinic and fairly intense physio. I told them several times my shoulder hurt, but they put it down to bruising from the fall. Now they have found (2 years later!!) my shoulder was fractured, and has osteo arthritis along with my wrist!! But, my wrist has never stopped hurting, this is 2 years after the fracture. But the pain I think is caused by post traumatic arthritis. They are now considering what should be done about these joints. I have had a hip replacement which had "catastrophic" joint failure and a compressed wedge fracture of the vertebrae. My other hip will also need replacing in 12 months.
I am also 57, and was and still am fit. I walk ok most of the time, but still use 1 crutch on uneven ground and hills, I am also afraid of falling. I take alendronic acid, and after some advice on here have altered my diet to include fermented foods, more green leafy veg, etc.
Hope you make some progress
These forums are brilliant, so much support and good advice
Chris

Wow thank-you everyone for your response it feels good to know that I am not alone in going through this. I do take vitamin D, calcium, magnesium, turmeric, b complex fish oil and a probiotic. I was taking k2 but had to stop as was told that it would interfer with my bloodthinners. Thought of having epson salt baths but can't get in or out of it! Have a TENS machine but physio told me not to use on hip as could heat up the metal pin. Trying to describe the burning searing pain to Dr, he just dismisses it saying that it was a major fracture (that I know). X-rays show that bone is healing but also extra bone is growing that could cause problems if it infringes on nerves etc. Really wish I could go back in time and have my old life back. Thanks again for your replies.
Cheers Diana

In time it will improve, once its finished healing, which its already doing it will then do remodelling, this means it will reshape the bone and get rid of excess deposits, I wish mine would heal, even a bit would be good.
Sounds mad but you need to exercise like mad to keep it mobile and to make sure you don't lose your range of motion
