Small right kidney measuring 88mm

Posted , 2 users are following.

I recently had an ultrasound due to prolonged periods. The U/S showed a thickened endometrium with multiple fibroids and enlarged uterus. Have since had a D&C and all normal. A hysterectomy has been advised by specialist. Now I am concerned because the U/S also showed a small right kidney of 88mm that my doctors were not concerned about because blood tests were OK. I believe the egfr was 87 although not 100% sure. What I was wondering can the person taking ultrasounds take a measurement that is a little incorrect. The U/S report mentioned nothing about seeking further advice for the kidney but did say that a gynecologist should be contacted. Please help as this is starting to freak me out.

Many people are born with 1 kidney, or 2 with 1 very small & one normal. So this may be your case. Ask your Dr to test to see your kidney function. This will probably ease your mind.

I got chronic kidney disease in 2007 after bladder cancer. 1 kidney functioned at 20% & one at 80%. This didn't concern my Drs & I just prayed that "the 80-percenter stayed good"🙄.

11years later the 20% functioning kidney stopped working & shrunk in size to where it is useless. We found this out because I had many infections. That is under control now & even with only 1 kidney which functions at 80% my Drs are not worried.

So, my long story is meant to ease your mind about kidney size. Check with your Dr on functioning of the kidneys & don't worry anymore if Drs say they're ok.

Good luck with your other issues!

Thanks Lala for your quick reply. May I ask how you test kidney function? I do believe that my kidney may have shrunk in size because previous US made no note of a small right kidney. This is why I am freakin out. I am not sure if the kidney size can be measured differently by each person taking the US or not. I have read that there can be a variance between each of them but not sure on the variance. I have read that a normal kidney for a female should be greater than 90mm so mine at 88mm is not that far off. Can I ask how small your kidney shrunk to and if you have had it removed? I am hoping that everything will be OK as I have never suffered a urinary tract infection in years. To tell the truth I have ever only had the one when was about 25. Do you know if an egfr of 87 is good? On the results it has it is OK if it is above 59. My potassium reading is 4.6 (which is within range (3.5-5.0) and Creat is 70 (which is also within range (40-110). My urea is 5.6 (which is within range (2.0-7.0) and Total Protein is 71 which is within range (60-82). Sorry for gabbling on. I hope you continue to stay well and my prayers are with you along with everyone else that are having health issues. This website has given me much support and it is great to speak with others. Thanking you again Lala.

I posted a reply regarding kidney function tests. If it doesn't show up let me know & I'll send another!

I guess my post was lost!

I don't have records on egfr, ect. But my atrophied left kidney is 48mm. The right is 112mm.

After months of infections my urologist ordered 1st an ultrasound which was irregular. 2nd a CT urogram with contrast. As the tech watched he said he could barely see that I had a left kidney. 3rd I had a nuclear renal function test which verified the other tests.

I had a stent put in to widen my scarred ureter. This is to allow more urine to flow thru the kidney in hopes it will wash out infections.

Altho the stent worked its way out in Aug 2017 I've only had 1 infection.

The kidney won't have to be removed as long as I don't start getting lots of infections. If I do, we will try another stent to see if we can avoid surgery.

I can't find records of egfr or other readings.

But my atrophied left kidney is 48mm. Right kidney is 112mm.

After many long-term infections my urologist ordered tests. 1st they did a regular ultrasound. 2nd they did a CT urogram with contrast. As it was running the technician said he couldn't see any function in the left kidney. 3rd they did a nuclear renal function test.

One of the tests showed a narrowed ureter. Dr hoped that by putting a stent in it would open up the ureter & get a bit more urine to flow & wash out infection. I've only had 1 infection since the stent was put in in August 2017.

The stent worked it's way out but I've been ok. If I start having infections the urologist will put another stent in. The last option will be to remove the kidney.

I hope this helps some. Let us know how you are doing!

      Thanks Lala,

I am so confused on what to do. I have to schedule for a hysterectomy ASAP with a gynecologist some 12 hours away from home. I might see if I can get into my GP again to see what she thinks about the whole thing. I'm just knot sure that she knows a great deal though and I don't want to waste money if I am not going to find out anything further, The gyno that I saw who has referred me to another gyno didn't seem to worried when he read the report from the US and looked at my blood tests etc either. I have to watch funds as I am going to be off work and have to pay for travel and accommodation to have operation which is not going to be cheap. Your reply have helped though. Many thx.

Of course I'm not an M.D. but you said you checked your numbers & none were beyond average. You haven't had infections & the Dr that saw your ultrasound wasn't concerned about the size of your kidney.

The small one may have always been like that, just no one commented on it. Unless you start having physical symptoms, my recommendation is to put all your energy into focusing on a positive outcome for your upcoming surgery. Don't worry about your kidneys until you are healed & stronger. I lived with CKD for 11 years before I started having issues!!

Whatever you do, best of luck!!
