Ask your surgeon. A little different, but my dad's surgeon for an operation on a vertebrae on his neck said he wouldn't do the surgery unless he quit smoking since it takes oxygen to heal the bone. May be a good motivation to quit. Best to you as you heal.

Good for you for trying to quit smoking.  Not sure where you live but there are products available to help -- patches, meds, etc.  There are also some good quit-smoking websites where you can get lots of support.    It's great that you only smoke 5-6 cigarettes a day.....I bet you're in a good place now to become a non-smoker!  Good luck with it and keep us posted.

His is something you must discuss with your dr. Also a medication to stop the cravings may help you quit ask you GP for a RX. Smoking can effect the blood flow and oxygen flow to the hip for required heeling.

Put your best effort foreward quit and after surgery your not going to be able to smoke in the hospital so this would be a good time to quit.

Dont waste your money on nicotine gum at lozenges it still keeps nicotine in the blood stream. A craving blocker as a RX is really what helped me quit when I went in for my first THR 22 years ago.

    Good Luck.

    hi amit,

I don't think I am the right person to answer your question .. I am a smoker - cut down to 5 -6 cigarettes daily , but a smoker nevertheless -

We know that it affects everything in our body -

What makes it worse is that you are constantly fighting with yourself - you know it is bad for you , you light one anyway and then feel guilty - stressed out trying to quit this habit ...

It is not easy - Find out for yourself when you really want to smoke and when it is just out of habit -

when do you smoke those 5-6 cigarettes?

good luck darling - it is tough - but you are the only one who can make that decision -

    big warm hug

      That is tough Amit ...

something funny though --- I was not allowed to smoke in the office where I was always on the computer and on the phone - Took 15 minutes breaks and lunch hour to smoke ---

However ..... once back at home, on the computer and on the phone I had to have a cigarette all the time ...

the phone would ring, I'd grab a cigarette first and then pick up the phone -

So, who is telling you or demanding that cigarette , Amit ? Which part of your body - and what would happen if you would say to your demanding body: NO .... not now????

      good luck Amit ----

My girlfriend stopped smoking after reading Quit smoking with Alan Carr - she was a pack-a-day smoker at that time -

look it up on the internet - maybe this will help you -

but remember Amit, you reall really need to want to stop smoking - if not, there will always be excuses to smoke that one cigaret -

      Namaste

    Hi Amid,

One good thing that came out of my accident (I fell and broke my hip) I couldn't have a cigarette in hospital, so when I came out I decided I've overcome the first few days (supposed to be the worst) so I've not had one for 9 wks now. I am using an e cig when I'm really craving. My daughter's are so pleased. I hope I can stay off them.

hey there! Not sure where you are but I quit seven years ago with a product called Chantix. It worked great but you have to want to quit for anything to work. I'm sure smoking slows down the healing process. Best of luck to you ! I know it's hard!

      Thanks for your kind advise.

Chantix in india sold by the name of champix manufacture by pfizer pharmaceuticals it is available only doctors prescription.

Hi Amit. It must be a challenge for you, recovering from surgery and having to focus on work with the time difference. As someone who used to work with clients who are regular smokers, I would say just limit the number of cigarettes daily as you are doing now and plan when you want to have one. Good for you cutting down. Careful about quitting cold turkey as nicotine withdrawal can sometimes cause your mood to go down. Also if you get Champax or some other nicotine withdrawal meds be sure your doctor tells you about side effects.

Good luck. Hope you get some sleep.

Someone on this forum asked her surgeon "what's the worst thing I can do with my new hip", he replied "Smoke".

I know it's hard - I gave up in 1973, but do try.

You can do it. I gave up 8 years ago and until you try you don't know what you are capable of.

Your recovery is more important, keep telling yourself that and perhaps buy some hard sweets to replace the cigarettes when you feel the urge.

      Good luck.
