Hello, I wanted to post about myself for some good news. Had Prostate and 13 Lymph Nodes removed 7/15. Pathology report came troubling. Major perinial invasion outside capsule. Semi. V. Neg., lymph nodes neg. So, 35 treatments of radiation 9/15. Now 2 years later psa .01....just met with urologist going to twice a year psa test instead of every 90 days. My numbers pre treatment were psa 6.5...gl. 4+3. Because I didn't have a reoccurance in first two years my Urologist said this would put me in a very good group of survi vors. Ups my percentage of NOT having a problem in next 5 years. I'm posting for the men that had positive margins .....things can still work out good. Pat

That is WONDERFUL news Patrick! KUDOS! We have a lot a confidence in my husband's doctors now and they're talking around the same lines. 40 radiation treatments @ the CCTCA in Phoenix. He goes down Sunday to have his markers put in and to get his 2nd shot of hormone therapy which the 1st already brought him down from PSA 49 - 6.4. The he comes home to Reno and waits to hear when they want to start radiation. Did the radiation have bad side effects for you? Doctors say "tiredness." But he's always tired anyway. Continue the GREAT work!

Did you have an prostate MRI prior to all this that caused any concerns?
Stay strong,
Anne.

Anne, I had a regular biopsy that returned a tumor on one side of my prostate. 3 of the needles were at 90% ...meaning I had a healthy size tumor. I just met with my Urologist yesterday. I told him if he could keep me alive for 8 years then I would have the benefit of 8 years of research and new treatments. His eyes got really big and he said this " Mr Mcdougle, there are many treatments Now that can help you that we haven't used. Who knows what will be around in 7 years. " So I'm feeling optimistic. This in closing, a psa of 11 is a little high. There are men on this site that had psa's of 1000 or higher. Those usually are the men with bone metastist. Pat7

just an update, my husband went for a follow up with the Prof who said his MRI did not show any suspicion of PC even though he has elevated PSA fluctuating between 10 to 11. He said to keep having PSA test done at least 6 monthly and get back in touch if it starts to get higher.

Patrick, glad to read you are doing well. I have a question for you. My husband's PSA went from 0.8 to 6.5 in 11-months' time. We were referred to a urologist. The urologist said it wasn't cancer because if it were cancer the PSA would not have jumped that quickly in 11-months' time. The doctor said the PSA measures inflammation in the body and that pneumonia could even cause his PSA to be elevated. I asked the doctor since he didn't think it was my husband's prostate, then where is the inflammation coming from? The doctor literally said, "It's hard to say, it's hard to say."
His plan for my husband is to wait three months and repeat the PSA. Both my husband and I are not comfortable with that. My husband is having excruciating back pain and has not been able to get a full night's sleep in almost a month. Soooo, my question for you is, how long did it take for your PSA to get to 6.5 (which is the exact number of the last PSA my husband had)?
We are seriously thinking of getting a new urologist and a second opinion. What are your thoughts?

Dear Teacher
I think you are right to want convincing answers to this rapid elevation of your husband's PSA reading sooner rather than later. As regards to his back pain I would see a good chiropactor preferably not a McTimoney qualified one for the best results.
Cheers Richard

Hi, it took years to get to 6.5. My first elevated psa that was over 4.0 was around 2009 and it was about a 4.7....kept going up a little each year till 2014...about your husband being retested, you don't have to wait 3 months. You could call a Urologists tomorrow and tell them what you are concerned about. The doctor will probably draw blood and send it to a lab. Your husbands sore back could be from old age and not from cancer. Prostate Can. in the bones would have a psa count in the hundreds. I don't blame you for wanting to find out why the test came back elevated. Pat

Thanks for your reply Patrick....Really good advice......I think we are going to find a different urologist. The soonest this urologist would repeat a PSA is in the middle of January. Also, really good point about my husband's PSA probably being higher than 6.5 if it is in the bones.........take care of yourself and thanks so much for responding to my post.
