So much pain

Posted , 8 users are following.

I recently found out that i have a herniated disc and I’ve had it for 5 weeks now. I got it at track practice and i still practiced with the pain for a week until i physically couldn’t anymore. I’m 15 years old, and I’ve read that in teenagers, herniated discs heal pretty fast. I have been icing my back, putting a heating pad on it, resting it, done stretches to help it, taken anti inflammatory pills and nothing has helped. My back has not improved one bit and i don’t know what to do. Someone please help!!!

Hi Isabel, as you are only 15 you need to speak to your parents first and get them to arrange a visit to a Nureology Consultation.

I don’t know where in the world you live as different countries have different methods,

I can sympathise with you as I have herniated discs along with a couple of other back problems, I’ve had 2 operations and feel worse after the operations. Let me know how you get on.

    Hi Isabel,

I’m sorry for your pain... hopefully you have spoke to your parents about this pain. Keep a log of your pain and what you are doing and how you are moving. Tell your parents to make you a dr appointment then they can refer you to the appropriate specialty department. It’s a process but sometimes takes awhile. Definitely don’t wait on it, you are young.

    Good luck

Yes i told my parents and went to an orthopedist and i got an MRI. They told me it is a herniated disc and in one month it should get 50% better and in 3 months it should eat 90% better. The thing that confuses me is that i have been resting my back for about 4 weeks now and i see no progress. I’m just frustrated and I don’t know what else to do.

Isabel, I’m confused! The orthopaedist told you it should get 50% better and in 3months it would get 90% better. Apart from the MRI what else did he do to be able to give you these figures? Also, rest isn’t the best thing for a herniated disc!

Maybe i didn’t do a great job of explaining what I’m trying to say, sorry. I felt the pain at track practice 5 weeks ago and 4 weeks ago i went to the orthopedist. I had an MRI, but i didn’t get the results back until last week. Although i didn’t know exactly what it was, i was almost sure it was a herniated disc, so i did exersizes that can help a herniated disc, i stopped going to track practice, i iced it, put a heating pad on it, i did everything. When the doctor finally told me it WAS a herniated disc, he basically told me to do everything i had already been doing. The thing that frustrates/confuses me, is that my back hasn’t been healing at all, and if anything, it has started to feel a bit worse. I hope this made more sense.

Hi Isabel, that makes more sense. Herniated discs don’t get better, I have tried everything and I’m in terrible pain every day. I was getting through on a lot of Morphine and Tramadol but I didn’t like how they made me feel so I’ve cut them all out and don’t take any more. I hope you find some sort of ease soon as I know it’s very difficult to get through the day with the pain.

Chiropractor.  Maybe something is out of line...  No drugs, non-invasive.

Well, they have shown that those exercises the doctor gave you are better at helping with the disc than bedrest is, so I'd say keeping up with the exercises, along with alternating the ice and heat is a good idea. Also, the orthopedist told you it takes time, you aren't at the 3 month mark yet when it would be 90% better. Finally, you decided to ignore the pain and run on a herniated disc which made a bad situation worse.  As for the chiro suggestion, I am an MD and we are taught they are quacks, so I can't suggest that, but I know some people who swear by them. Let your parents decide. I would certainly give yourself a few more weeks of the doctor's exercises along with the ice and heat. I have gotten a herniated disc in my neck to go back in with a prednisone dose pack like they give you if you get a bad allergic reaction or poison ivy etc. that you take orally. You could get one of those from your pediatrician.  It worked like a charm and is much easier on you than getting a needle in your back with steroids.  In fact, that would be what I would recommend as my next step for you at your age if things don't start getting any better in a few more weeks.  If you want to try more exercises than the doctor gave you, ask him for a referral to a physical therapist.  Give them a good month and I bet you feel better.  If not, try my steroid dose pack.
