So scared

Hello all I hope some one can help.  I have had a dry barking cough on and off for months, maybe 12 minths.  Been to the docs a few times and was told my own body would fight off the weezing.  Never has done !  Went back to the docs today as I have been up most nights barking like a dog, dry and sore and uncontrolble.  I am 56 and a smoker.  She asked me to blow in a tube and my result was I had the lungs of a 65 year old.  She did say her test was not accurate so I am having the other test in a few weeks as that is the earliest I can get in.  I was also sent for chest X-ray which I had today.  Doc started me on reflux meds but said it is likely to be copd and there is no cure. I am sat here petrified, the X-ray will not be sent to my GP for 7 to 10 days.  The cough is oainful and hurrendous.  It is at an all time worse even the wheezing keeps me awake it is that noise.  And very breathless.

Dr said it could be reflux and gave me antacids.  Then when I said I was a smoker she changed her tune.  I cannot understand how you can throw copd to someone knowing they will google what it means - she said the X-Ray was to check what it was as it could be a combined thing as she heard crackling on my back. I will make an appointment but I just know she will say until we know what it is how can I give yiu anything.... Well not happy today was up all night, feel achy and my throat is that sore,  oh. She said she could see inflammation at the back of my throat.  So scared sad

Deborah......I'm so, so sorry that you're going through all of this.  It sounds like you need to get a 2nd opinion and go to a pulmonary doctor.  It's ridiculous that you are having to wait 3 weeks to get results and in the meantime your doctor/nurse seem very unconcerned!  I was diagnosed by way of a CT scan and I had results immediately sent to my doctor.  EVERYTHING was handled within a few hours, ie. nite oxygen, spiriva, advair because I have a VERY thorough, concerned doctor.  This waiting is NOT good......only makes you more frightened and wasting time to get you started on the proper medication.  Again, my heart TRULY goes out to you.   XOX

    Hi Deborah,

Pulmonary rehabilitation goes through physio, exercise, explains your illness so you understand, teach you good eating habits etc.

Your Dr needs to do a request.

It's a big step forward and you will have help with specialised COPD nurses and physio.

    Hope this helps anyone.

    Xx
