Hi Vanessa, you wouldn't be normal if you didn't have worries, but rest assured there will be at least one person on the team monitoring everything - breathing, blood pressure, heart rhythm - all your vital signs.  If there is the slightest hint of anything suspicious they will dive in.  That's not going to happen though.  But tell them you are worried and let them reassure you as professionals.  They do these operations every day.

If I get the chance I think I'll opt for a spinal block and a sedative rather than a general.  I find the idea of a general much more scarey.

When I was told it would be a spinal and sedative and not a GA I really panicked.  I took advice and spoke to people who had had this treatment and although still worried agreed with their recommendations.  Now having had it done (three weeks ago today) I would heartily recommend the spinal and sedative.

Thanks Thursday next (you need to change your name to Three Weeks last Thursday lol cheesygrin).   Did you get a choice or did they just recommend what they thought would be best for you? xxx

They put their recommendations and I didn't argue it.  I discussed it and asked why he was recommending it and once he had explained I felt I had no grounds for refusing.

Thursday Next is a character in a series of wonderful books by Jasper Fforde and is also the name of one of my dogs.

Sort of fantasy - Terry Pratchett type but not the same.

I have had both general for a hernia repair and spinal for my hip, and I can say 100% I was much happier with the spinal.  I was awake and happy when my sedative wore off with spinal, where as with general I was groggy, had a sore throat from the breathing tube they put down your throat to breathe for you, and felt like crud.

The idea if having a needle in your spine sounds a bit scary, but it hurt less than having blood drawn. The next thing you know after that, is when you wake up in recovery =)

As mentioned, you don't lose any breathing with spinal - you're just taking a nap with no feeling from your waist down.

It's still fine to get your freak out on tho.  I thought I'd be cool and calm, but I didnt sleep a wink the night before my surgery.. so really, nothing to apologize over.  Just let the staff know how you feel, and they will do a wonderful job at reassuring you.  It's a very traumatic experience for you, but it's what they do every day =)

Day 10 post op for me. I loved the spinal with sedation. Remember nothing after a "pinprick" on my back until I awakened in Recovery feeling clear-headed and amazed it was over.
