So stressed out

A few months ago I noticed quite a lot of small white patches on my vulva.  For years I've had problems on and off but have never gone to see about it as they eventually go away. I've had what seem like blisters that bleed and what seems like boils and they occur more often around the time of my period. Also through the years I've had a burning sensation inside that's worse when using tampons and things like that. I've also had itching on and off around the vulva and inside the  vagina. I shaved to get a better look at these patches but thought nothing of it. A few months later and I started to look up google and my symptoms have led me to Lichen Sclerosus. I am 99.9 percent sure that this is what I have. I've been so depressed reading about it and I'm petrified and embarrassed to go to see my GP because I think it will result in waiting for a referral to a dermatologist or to get a biopsy and even with all that there is no cure and a lot of people cpmplain about the steroids. I've become so depressed that I barely go out and I've just been sitting in crying all the time feeling like a freak. My skin looks tighter and wrinkly and ugly and the labia majora looks weird and thickened and like it's lost its elasticity. I don't even feel like a proper woman anymore. I'm concerned about vulval cancer, fusing and shrinking and the fact that if it is an autoimmune disease I might end up getting another one because I read you can get diabetes and thyroid problems. Also I'm not sure if it is related but for the last few months I've had two days of spotting before my period begins. This is new to me plus bad period pain for the last couple of months.

Niki, don't worry, it will be okay.  Listen to Morrell...she thinks the same as me.  You need to see a gyneocologist and get on the clob to start.  This is a great forum with lots of good advice.  It's not the end of the world.  I use cornstarch to keep the area dry but many use a lubricant so you can try different things to see what works for you.  Don't be sad...take care,

All your advice is appreciated as I hadn't heard of such a thing untill a few months ago and it sounds like a nightmare

We can't predict for sure, because there seem to be several levels of severity of LS, but i had two kids in my thirties and lots of great sex in my forties. The atrophy happened after menopause.

Do watch Dr. Goldstein's presentation, linked in the top pinned discussion of this forum.

Bless you I understand exactly how you feel.  I have felt so low at times but I finally got the courage to go to the hospital and I felt relieved when they confirmed it was LS.  They have been so helpful and now I am on steroid cream and looking after myself better I feel like a new person.  I don't seem to have any other problems but I am sure it can all be controlled once you see the right people. Please go to see your GP.  Take care X

Please be courageous and go to see your doctor and ask for referral to a gynacologist who specialises in vulval health or similar; I really understand your dread (like lots of others I was full of that too) but all the things you most fear are more likely to happen if you don't get proper treatment.  Once you take the first step, it will in time get easier.  And the thing about this forum is that you'll get used to virtually-talking about things we don't usually talk about and that will help as well, I think.  Every best wish.

Thanks. It's overwhelming at the moment. My brain needs a break from all the worry.

I have an appointment for Tuesday. Might seem like a silly question but should I shave?

No need to shave - also you will need to be very careful what you use around that area as any thing perfumed is not a good ideal & certainly not hair removing cream or a razor. I just do a little trim with round ended scissors now and again when hair gets a bit long, but you do need to be careful. If you cut yourself in this area it could take a while to heal - so best not to shave at all .

I went to see my GP this morning, it was rushed as I ended up late due to traffic. She said because there was hair loss she thinks it's a fungal infection. She said if it doesn't get better to come back and she'll refer me to a dermatologist. She's given me Daktacort cream and Terbinafine tablets. I know a lot of people with LS get told it's a yeast infection and then they find out it's actually LS but I suppose I better try the medication and see if it helps any. I'm not optimistic though.

As GP's don't see LS as much as gynocologists it is often not properly diagnosed & yes my doctors kept treating me for thrush for 2 years before getting a correct diagnosis from my Gynocologist. But i'd give it a  few weeks then go straight back if no better. Then ask for a gynocologist and say why.
